Strong communication skills and the ability to support and educate people were essential in ensuring buy-in to the organisational changes concerning pay and working conditions. Working with high risk HIV patients, many of whom were traumatised asylum seekers and some with neurological impairments, necessitated careful risk assessment and management, team working skills, careful documentation of all interactions and regular liaison with various agencies, including social services, immigration, legal services, deportation centres, housing services, child protection and other health services. I trained and supervised mental health, nursing and medical staff in psychological approaches to behavioural change (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Motivational Interviewing); ran groups, workshops and educational sessions in Third Sector community HIV services; conducted audits and research which were presented at national and international HIV conferences; and co-developed national guidelines of the management of HIV and Sexual Health in conjunction with the British Psychological Society and the National AIDS Trust.
