About Sharon Olbeter, Colonel (Ret)
DO YOU LONG FOR SOMETHING DIFFERENT IN YOUR WORK? That was me as I found myself as a civil engineering officer in the Air Force. I didn’t enjoy my work so I lived for the weekends. I soon learned there was much more to career satisfaction than matching myself to some secure profession. While experiencing a variety of work situations, I identified better matches for myself. Unknowingly, I engaged in job crafting to make each job more appealing to add value and volunteered for assignments that seemed interesting.I gravitated from civil engineering to people-focused assignments. Instead of things and data, I was interested in ideas for and about people. My last assignment was working within the Secretary of the Air Force office which had oversight for all Air Force personnel-related issues. Along the way, I earned graduate degrees in psychology and adult education and earned professional coaching certifications in career and executive coaching.NOW I ADVOCATE FOR CAREER CRAFTINGI’m against radical career transitions - instead you need to build a bridge from the present to the future you want. I conceived my motivation-based DOABLE SYSTEM to help you address three requirements to creating the career you want:# 1 - Match desires with opportunities to grow or contributeI discovered my interests, strengths, values, etc. while engaging in activities and seeking ways to provide value. No matter what the job, there was always some degree of choice in what I did. With a career compass, I could then be alert to relevant opportunities.# 2 - Believe the benefits of action will outweigh the costsFiguring out what I wanted to do was only one piece of the career puzzle. I needed to believe that taking action would pay off - otherwise there was no reason to act. While planning and strategizing has its place, eventually you need to decide what to do and get into action. Taking tentative small steps to test ideas worked to quell any concerns I had, such as fear of making mistakes, failing, being rejected, being embarrassed, etc.# 3 - Take focused, effective actions and persist to get results you wantIn the military, we set SMART outcome goals to focus on what we wanted to accomplish by certain dates. In civilian life, I learned about process goals which are how you’re going to execute strategies within timeframes to achieve those outcomes. Those were things within my control and I could adjust them as needed to get better results. To learn more, let’s talk - go to 𝗵𝘁𝘁𝗽𝘀://𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗮𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗼𝗻.𝗮𝘀.𝗺𝗲/𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆
