Healthcare is always a fast-paced field. But now more than ever, everything is changing so much for patients and clinicians alike. These are challenging times for institutions—but there has also never been a better time to be curious, ask questions and get to the heart of how we can improve the patient experience.I always loved the science side of what we do. Nursing brings that together with the people component. You need to connect with patients to be a great nurse. Now as administrator of the James Cancer Network, I keep the patient experience paramount as we look for ways to transform care delivery.The goal is always better outcomes for patients and more efficient environment for the James. In my day to day work, I pursue that through:• working with and supervising the call centers I’m responsible for, including our virtual platform • connecting with patients, both within the organization and through our community oncology partnerships• mentoring and teaching young nurses—I love sharing what I’ve learned, and I still see patients periodically, or jump in to help someone at a call centerOne of the most important things I’ve learned in decades of healthcare is that it’s easy for communication to only go one way. Talking less and listening more is a practice, but what you can learn from that as a leader is invaluable.Outside of healthcare, I like to stay involved with the community but in a very different way. I’m a singer and participant in the Harmony Project, a community choir with a social purpose. We sing, serve and volunteer together. It’s a way to give back to those who may not have the resources and meet inspiring people from all over the region.Specialties include: strategic leadership | community outreach | process improvement
