I began my work at PDS Legal as an Associate and in five years, moved up from Associate to Senior Associate to Principal Associate. The change in levels has mostly contributed to increased professional responsibilities. With litigation remaining core to my heart, for me it was about levelling up from assisting my senior in Court to being able to stand on my own in Court. This was possible quite early in my career, due to a strong support system in my team which worked with me, my peers and senior colleagues at the firm, including our partner, Mr. Tarun Gulati. Notable engagements and litigation matters include:1. Preferred legal advisor for the Indian arm of one of the world’s leading consumer electronics company for Indirect Tax (previous regime and GST) laws and have represented them successfully in more than ten forums including High Courts across the Country and the Supreme Court. 2. Preferred legal advisor for one of the leading mobile phone companies in India for Indirect Tax (previous regime and GST) laws and have represented them successfully in various High Courts and the Supreme Court in indirect tax cases. 3. Advised and assisted representation in various Constitutional challenges before High Courts across the Country on a variety of issues in tax and non-tax cases.4. Advising and representing a leading Indian mobile phone company in various indirect cases under the previous regime.5. Advising and strategizing litigation for a leading telecommunications infrastructure companies in various indirect tax issues across the country. Also overseeing effective reduction in overall litigation matters to effectively streamline business operations.6. Advising and representing India’s largest tyre company in a string of cases under VAT Acts and GST Acts.7. Currently advising the world’s second largest biopharmaceutical company on various issues in the new GST regime including transitional schemes, job work and input credit schemes from a legal perspective.

As a part of an overall shift in our teaming capabilities and in pursuit of a much challenging role, our team decided to move to a law firm that was developing its strategy on the litigation front. The memo was simple. Teaming, strategizing and delivery exceptional service to clients was already our MO, we just needed to level up our game and get recognized in our own shoes. What began as a simple professional move from one law firm to another, developed at a rapid pace, into a sea shift in our work style, a much more challenging environment and above all, the hunger to deliver more to not only our regular clients but also to new clients, whom we won and who supported us through the journey, which has still not reached its destination.

I began working with ELP shortly after leaving Aqeuus, primarily, to develop my skills in the field of taxation and corporate commercial laws. Having handled a large amount of litigation in Aequus, I was able to develop a sound litigation strategy for a variety of clients, from individuals to large MNCs. I joined ELP to use this particular skill set in a law firm. With ELP, I worked closely with colleagues and seniors with good teaming abilities to deliver quality work to clients. We were able to service clients in a wide spectrum of sectors. From steel industry to power generation and distribution companies, from airport infrastructure developers to pharmaceutical companies. Highlights of my time at ELP include:1. Devising litigation strategy, end to end drafting including drafting of writ petitions, special leave petitions and assisting senior counsel, in various indirect tax litigations before the Supreme Court and High Courts. A large number of these cases are leading references in indirect tax jurisprudence in India. 2. Devising litigation strategy, assisting in investigations, assistance at the assessment stage, replying to show cause notices, appearance before lower level tax authorities and appellate authorities and appellate tribunals, discovery of information, documentation etc in a range of laws focussing on indirect tax, direct tax, banking and recovery cases, economic offences etc. 3. Advising and handholding clients on a variety of issues in indirect tax, direct tax, corporate disputes, tenders and e-auctions etc.

I had the pleasure of working with Aequus Associates as a young law student. Both Sunil and Rajat, my mentors here were a significant inspiration for me taking up litigation as a long term career choice. As a full time intern and as an associate for almost a year, I had the pleasure of handling a wide variety of litigation. Primary work examples are as below:- Heading the litigation strategy for a premier College for securing its powers and responsibilities under the Constitution of India especially on account of being a minority run educational institution.- Part of the litigation involving issues arising on account of MCD Sealing and the Master Plan 2021 at both the Supreme Court and the Delhi High Court.-Advised various power companies on issues arising from acquisition of land, power purchase and agreements with various State Governments and other stake holders.

SPIL is the India Chapter of the International Law Students Association ( www.ilsa.org) and comprises of law students from the capital city’s premier law colleges viz. Campus Law Centre, Amity Law School and Law Centre-I. The organization finds a unique and important place in a law student’s life because of three essential reasons. One: because it alone provides a platform broad enough to sustain and accommodate the ever increasing facets and specialties of international law which is not limited by concerns like course-requirement. Secondly, what is exciting is the fact that SPIL is a young organization (founded: 1999) which is growing in leaps and bounds. This is solely due to the efforts of the students that comprise it. The high caliber of the members enables the undertaking of more and more challenging assignments with each passing year. Lastly, SPIL with its vast pool of resources helps assist its members in receiving practical training by securing internships.
