The way that I look at it is that small business owners go into business to do what they love, what they are passionate about, and what they are good at. But the HR role is critical to the success of of an organization, regardless of the size. A small company who doesn’t have the resources to keep an HR professional on staff still needs guidance, resources, and the ability to ask questions and get answers from someone who is both knowledgeable and accountable. Many business owners mistakenly believe that because they are small, the laws don’t apply to them (or that they won’t get caught). But mostly, they simply don’t know what they don’t know. Unfortunately, not knowing will not get a company out of hot water during an audit, investigation, or a lawsuit.
