Fines, back taxes, lawsuits, and other HR issues can wound or destroy a small business. The way that I look at it is that small business owners go into business to do what they love, what they are passionate about, and what they are good at. Those talents and passions don’t typically include employment law, compliance, and tedious tasks like writing job descriptions. But the HR role is critical to the success of of an organization, regardless of the size. A small company who doesn’t have the resources to keep an HR professional on staff still needs guidance, resources, and the ability to ask questions and get answers from someone who is both knowledgeable and accountable. I started helpdeskHR because I have seen a pattern in small business. Many business owners mistakenly believe that because they are small, the laws don’t apply to them (or that they won’t get caught). But mostly, they simply don’t know what they don’t know. Unfortunately, not knowing will not get a company out of hot water during an audit, investigation, or a lawsuit. It is the responsibility of the organization to know what the legal requirement are and abide by them.
