As part of a small team, I often find myself working on projects which fall outside of my normal role. For example, I can be found supporting colleagues from our Engagement and Learning Team with their work.The Grand Theatre is supported by an army of 100+ dedicated volunteers - many of whom have supported the theatre since it was saved from demolition in the late 1970's, as Operational House Manager, I have responsibility for developing the volunteer programme, to reflect the needs of our organisation and those of the people who engage with us. I firmly believe that the our volunteer programme has social benefits, far beyond the stage. I have used the programme to engage with people who would have found themselves isolated from society, through disability, bereavement or other issues which may leave them feeling unable to engage. Successes have seen some of our volunteers progress to joining our paid team of staff, often using the Access to Work Scheme to support them, or go on to achieve gainful employment with other organisations across our sector and beyond.
