Our vision was to acquire from the Council the old and neglected heated open air swimming pool in Beccles and to create a destination facility – Beccles Lido, where local people, visitors and tourists would want to visit and where bathers could have fun, keep fit or just relax in the beautiful surroundings of the river Waveney.Having raised over £300,000 and established Beccles Lido as a successful, community run enterprise and tourist destination, BLL has since acquired Beccles Public Hall and has taken over its management as well. Both facilities are welcoming unprecedented numbers of visitors and are profitable after many years of losses under Council ownership.In the future, BLL’s charitable objects allow it to acquire and manage other carefully selected leisure assets in Beccles, if the opportunity reasonably arises and the Board considers it prudent to do so. In 2012 it acquired Big Dog Ferry, a passenger boat running trips to the historic Geldeston Locks Inn, which runs alongside the Lido under the Lido management group.BLL is very much a community run organisation and the Lido and the Public Hall are very much community facilities. The Trustees are local volunteers. Volunteers have undertaken and will continue to be encouraged to be actively involved in the repairs, maintenance and development of the Lido and the Public Hall. The Public Hall is largely staffed by volunteers. BLL hopes that it can help and inspire similar projects both locally and nationally.We continue to need to raise additional funds, both to maintain and improve each of the Assets, as well as to fund ongoing running costs.
