As an educator, I've served students from K-12 public-schools to doctoral candidates at Ivy-League universities. I developed and taught four new courses while a 2016-18 Princeton Arts Fellow, ran the composition programs at Tufts and Brown Universities as a visiting faculty member, and chaired the Musicianship department and founded the New Music Ensemble at the Bard Conservatory of Music's Preparatory Division. I also taught students in grades 6-12 at Kaufman Music Center's Special Music School (PS 859).As a composer, I often focuses on folksong, field recording, and sonic ephemera to explore placemaking and memory. I've worked with Dawn Upshaw and the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, JACK Quartet, Talea Ensemble, Ensemble Dal Niente, Aizuri Quartet, and Contemporaneous. My music's been performed at Carnegie Hall’s Zankel Hall and Weill Recital Hall, Merkin Concert Hall, the Morgan Library, and the Library of Congress, and I've received commissions from the American Composers Forum, the Jerome Foundation, the BMI Foundation/Concert Artists Guild, and Chamber Music America. As a violinist, I perform with the String Orchestra of Brooklyn, and in solo performances of Hi, Chuck, an evening-length sonic memoir I composed, built around a cassette tape my mother recorded in 1990.As an administrator, I'm currently Executive Director of Musicambia, developing music programs inside prisons throughout the United States, in an effort to cultivate artistic communities that nurture the humanity of all involved.I co-created Memory Remix—free workshops on making music with voicemails on cell phones—and have served as a consultant for Spoleto Festival USA’s Tell Your Story initiative, an innovative community engagement project that blends oral history and creative practice.
