I lead crews on habitat restoration projects in the maritime chaparral ecoregion on Bureau of Land Management Fort Ord public land. I have been leading groups of volunteers performing a winter and spring bird survey at the Upper Carr Lake restoration site in Salinas, CA. Our protocol consists of walking a defined area throughout a riparian restoration site to inventory avian richness and relative abundance in order to estimate changes in avian diversity. The goal of these surveys is to provide a tool to help ascertain the success of riparian habitat restoration in an urban setting. I also co-authored the Common Birds of Upper Carr Lake Identification Guide used by volunteers and students during bird surveys.
