As a Ph.D. candidate in Russian, Eastern European, and Eurasian history at The Ohio State University, I performed research in archives, digital databases, and media as well as conducted interviews. I tailored hypotheses and methodologies to locate the most relevant pools of data for answering my research questions. When handling foreign-language materials, I combined my translation skills with my subject matter expertise to analyze the source in its context and to identify patterns. During the research process, I sought to understand the materials on their own terms while maintaining a critical analytical lens. Networking with scholars, public figures, and librarians provided me with divergent perspectives and opportunities to collaborate. All research, however, requires funding, which I acquired through teaching and drafting grant proposals. At The Ohio State University, I worked directly with professors and as part of a team of graduate students. To manage the high volume of students—averaging fifty-plus per class—I divided my workload into small daily assignments to ensure each student received timely and substantive feedback. For online courses, I utilized Zoom sessions to clarify expectations and offer advice. In addition to my university package, I applied for external funding to supplement my income. In composing grant applications, I adapted complex research arguments and findings to the interests and needs of the issuing institution. I calculated and justified budget estimates, including breakdowns for transportation, lodging, and per diem.
