The Esophageal and Airway Treatment Center at Boston Children's Hospital is dedicated to the care of infants, children and young adults with complex esophageal and airway problems. For our team, these very rare esophageal conditions are not rare at all. Since the center’s inception in 2009, we have become the most experienced institution in the world when it comes to diagnosing and treating: • Esophageal atresia (EA) • Esophageal injury and trauma • Esophageal strictures and perforations • Hiatal hernias • Tracheal diverticulum • Tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF) • Tracheomalacia and bronchomalacia My primary duties include performing and assisting in evaluative and therapeutic endoscopy and bronchoscopy, aiding in thoracotomy and laparotomy cases via intraoperative endoscopy, caring for patients through the peri-operative period and in outpatient clinic in order to establish diagnoses, conduct bedside procedures, interpret labs, imaging, and studies, and develop treatment plans via multidisciplinary collaboration. Our key endoscopic therapies include balloon dilatation, endoscopic incisional therapy, intraluminal drug delivery, ERBE electrosurgery and Argon plasma coagulation, stenting, esophageal wound vacuum employment to treat perforation, endoscopic ultrasound, foreign body removal, and G-tube and GJ tube placement. We also routinely diagnose and manage severe GERD with esophagitis, Barrett’s esophagus, eosinophilic esophagitis, esophageal food impaction, peptic ulcer disease, cyclic vomiting syndrome, gastroparesis, pyloric stenosis, dumping syndrome, micronutrient deficiency disorder, celiac disease, IBS, H. pylori, and small intestinal bacterial overgrowth.

Clinical Assistant Ii

Fegan 5 predominantly serves the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition. This division is dedicated to treating infants, children, adolescents and young adults with both common and complex gastrointestinal, liver, and nutritional problems. The highly-trained team of doctors, nurse practitioners, nurses, social workers, dietitians, and psychologists specialize in the evaluation and treatment of a wide variety of diseases. As the largest Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition in the world, more than 40,000 patient visits are scheduled and 4,000 procedures are performed here annually. As a clinical assistant in a multi-specialty department, my greatest experiences come from beyond my regular duties of measuring vital signs and managing clinic flow. Serving such clinics as our Esophageal Atresia Program and Vascular Anomalies Clinic, I am able to assist providers during exams and procedures. This exposes me to common and rare conditions that allow me to learn from the perspectives of the patients, parents, and providers involved. My experiences working on children's cases have both tested my resiliency and strengthened my resolve to work in medicine. The Fegan 5 unit also serves the following clinics: General Renal Clinic, Renal Transplant Clinic, Renal Stone Clinic, Aerodigestive Center, Celiac Disease Program, Irritable Bowel Disease Clinic, Eosinophilic Gastrointestinal Disease Program, Home Parenteral Nutrition Program, Motility and Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders Center, Esophageal Atresia Clinic, Vascular Anomalies Clinic, and others. The Boston Children's Hospital Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition was proudly ranked the #1 pediatric gastroenterology department in 2014 by U.S. News & World Report.

The Mayo Family Pediatric Pain Rehabilitation Center at Children’s Hospital Boston is an intensive interdisciplinary rehabilitation program that serves the needs of children and adolescents with chronic musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain. Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS), also known as Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD), is the most common diagnosis given to children referred to the center. The Pediatric Pain Rehabilitation Center is the most comprehensive stand-alone, day hospital program of its kind in the United States, offering intensive rehabilitation to children and adolescents who have not responded to traditional outpatient treatment. Participants are typically between 7 and 18 years old and receive daily occupational, psychological and physical therapy sessions. The clinic aims for patients to resume normal function, regain sufficient physical strength and endurance for daily activities, and manage pain-related emotional distress. As assistant to the PT, OT, MD, nursing and psychology staff, I became a part of the intensive process the patients endured to meet these treatment goals. Being an integral member of a diverse clinical team exposed me to the interaction that occurs among specialists when treating complex conditions.

Research Assistant

The ACCESS study is a prospective cohort of prenatally enrolled mother-child pairs designed to study the interactive effects of early life stress and other physical environmental factors on urban childhood asthma risk in the US. Recruitment occurred between August 2002 and January 2007, enrolling pregnant women receiving prenatal care at Brigham & Women's Hospital, Boston Medical Center, three urban community health centers and women attending Women, Infants and Children (WIC) programs associated with the health centers in the Boston metropolitan area and surrounding suburbs. The project was designed to take advantage of the structure of the affiliated WIC programs given particular difficulties with recruitment and retention of study participants in this largely lower-income, ethnically diverse population, many of whom have moved frequently and/or do not have telephones at different stages as the study has progressed. As the coordinator for cognitive testing, I conducted over 120 learning and memory tests, collected biological samples to test for cortisol levels and lead exposure, authored a procedure manual, trained research assistants, initiated patient recruitment initiatives, and assisted in the publication of the study findings. I also assisted with a pulmonary study (Programming of Intergenerational Stress Mechanisms (PRISM) study), for which I performed pulmonary function tests on children and administered psychological questionnaires. I often met with participants in their homes because of their economic circumstances, and exposure to poverty greatly enriched my professional awareness and sensitivity.

Research Technician I

Boston, Ma, Us

The Center for Morphometric Analysis (CMA) is dedicated to the development and application of morphometric methods to biomedical imaging data, primarily high-resolution MRI. Using automated and semi-automated software written in the lab, MRI brain images are segmented into anatomical regions of interest. From this, research technnicians study the volume, surface, thickness, shape, and location of these regions and combine this with other types of information (behavioral studies, functional-MRI scans, diffusion-MRI, etc.) to analyze both the structure and function of the human brain. My year as a research technician in this lab required in-depth knowledge of the brain's anatomical structures and physiological features. I specialized in voxel-based manual segmentation and cortical parcellation of lesions from stroke, which taught me a great deal of neuroanatomy and radiological techniques. Though I loved the work and research, I soon realized, however, that my true calling lies in patient interaction. Though fascinated by the science behind my work, my passion for clinical care was calling me back to the field, and I had to follow.
