This was an exciting opportunity to study the effects of external forces—pH, nutrient concentration, temperature—on biofilm development in Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis. Part of my work included learning new techniques and lab equipment to study cell development. I cultured cells in a bacterial hood and produced images using confocal laser scanning microscopy.

For my capstone project, I developed plans for a chemical plant designed to separate ammonia from water via distillation. The project was developed with an eye toward functionality of design along with careful consideration of the costs to construct and operate the plant upon completion. Part of my design work was constructing process flow diagrams, piping, and instrumentation diagrams. I used ASPEN Plus as the software platform so that team members could run simulations throughout the testing process. Calculations included a variety of temperature and pressure tests along with assessing various types/sizes of heat exchangers, pumps, and vessels for the plant. At the conclusion of the capstone, all lab reports and documentation were coalesced into a formal report that presented the successful design of the plant along with recommendations for theoretical enhancements.

In this on-site internship with the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection, I was the sole Chemical Engineer on the team analyzing road salt contamination of ground water and assessing the impact on the local public drinking supply. Part of our work entailed studying data about salt contamination trends to determine effects of road salt use on potable water with a specific focus on proximity to roads and volume of traffic (we used GIS Software). We developed a framework depicting those waterways most impacted by the use of road salt and created graphic overlays to highlight areas at greatest risk. At project conclusion, we developed and presented our findings and results to the MassDEP team.
