About Shay-Lynn Smith

I currently practice with Everyday OT out of Burnaby, BC. Since completing my masters degree in Occupational Therapy in 2019, I have developed a diverse professional background that spans long-term care, pediatrics, and mental health services. My extensive experience has fostered a strong commitment to supporting neurodivergent individuals, particularly those with autism and PDA traits.I use a child-led, play-based approach in my practice, focusing on building a strengths-based relationship and mutual regulation as the foundation for effective therapy. I incorporate a range of techniques, including trauma-informed care, PDA-informed strategies, the Cognitive Orientation to Occupational Performance (CO-OP) model, motivational interviewing, and sensory processing supports. This eclectic approach ensures that therapy is both holistic and personalized, addressing each client's unique needs and preferences. My therapeutic philosophy centers on creating a comfortable and supportive environment where clients feel safe and understood. I start sessions with activities that align with clients' interests and comfort levels, building trust and rapport before focusing on specific goals. This method is especially beneficial for individuals who have had challenging experiences with therapy in the past.Flexibility is a hallmark of my practice. I understand that plans and needs can change, and I am adept at adjusting my approach to meet the current needs of my clients, whether due to shifts in sleep patterns, mental health, or emerging interests. I offer services in-clinic, in-home, and via telehealth to accommodate a wide range of needs and preferences.Outside of work, I am deeply engaged in aerial arts, which allows me to explore movement and expressiveness in unique ways. I also enjoy video games, learning new art projects, and exploring the outdoors. My love for the outdoors, rooted in my upbringing on the East Coast, remains a significant part of my life in British Columbia, where I embrace the natural beauty and adventure opportunities available.

  • Tinyeye Therapy Services
    Paediatric Occupational Therapist
Tinyeye Therapy Services Feb 2020 - Jun 2022
    Remote
As an OT with TinyEYE I am servicing a remote caseload of private and school-based paediatric clients ranging from ages 5-18 with varied physical, cognitive, and psychosocial needs. Through live video, I complete formal and informal assessments, work in a consultative and direct therapy model, and provide caregiver support. I take a top-down approach as much as possible (i.e., focusing on the activity they can’t do instead of the reason why they can’t do it), focus on motivation strategies for participation in and between sessions and then use bottom-up approaches as needed to build skills for actual occupations. I have used direct therapy, parent coaching, and consulted for my part-time caseload. I also have experience with formal and informal assessments, I use assessments conscientiously where I only use formal assessments when the data has therapeutic value. This position allowed me to figure out how I practice as an OT. I had little support and was a new therapist, and this meant that I had to figure a lot of ways of practicing out on my own. It was challenging but I now know that I practice through child driven goals first and focus on self-regulation and willing participation before goal based work. - working fully remotely in a telehealth role - clients were all children and youth ages 4-18 with most clients receiving services through autism funding - the caseload was a mix of in-person schools and homeschooled children - goal areas included: fine motor and writing/typing, executive function strategies, increasing attention and participation

Each guest would participate in their own way to make a beautiful group dynamic. In the second half of my placement, I planned groups focused on a winter theme as well as life-skills programming specifically for the older guests there. Since completing my placement, I have visited Nova's Ark to volunteer twice for a few hours and connect with the staff and guests there. I can't speak highly enough about the amazing space that Nova's Ark is for staff, students, guests, and countless animals.
