Shay McCarthy is a Senior Engineer for Materials and Process Engineering at Virgin Galactic. She is currently supporting specification writing, process improvement, and MRB adjuducation for the Hybrid Rocket Motor Propulsion System used in SpaceShipTwo and the Delta future fleet of commercial space vehicles. She received her Bachelor's of Science in Chemical Engineering from California Polytechnic State University of Pomona in 2017, where she studied biocompatibility of titanium alloys as hip implants. She received her Masters of Science in Materials Science from the University of Southern California in 2022. From 2017 to 2019 she was the lead M&P ENgineer on the service life extension program for the F/A-18 E/F Super Hornet at Northrop Grumman in El Segundo, CA. She led a team of 10 in inspecting structural metallic and composite parts for signs of fatigue, corrosion, static overload, and wear by UT, optical microscopy, and FPI. She performed failure analysis on all defects and presented them in a formal report to Boeing and the Navy. The project resulted in an extension of the service life of the F/A-18 E/F Navy fleet and a list of new inspection locations for regular maintenance. From 2018 to 2020 she was the lead M&P Engineer in the Northrop Grumman M&P El Segundo lab on chemical safety and materials test lab operations, such as microscopy, failure analysis, thermal analysis, conversion coatings/anodize/alodine, and physical analysis. From 2020 to 2022 Shay was a program M&P lead engineer on the weekend shift at the Palmdale Northrop Grumman site, specializing in aerospace composites fabrication/assembly/repair. She supported MRB efforts for the production line and supported several process improvement projects.
