Instructor - Media Politics And InterventionColumbia College Chicago Jan 2006 - May 2009Three hour seminar intermediate course introducing students to historical incidents of genocide paying particular attention to the role of the international and US media in covering the issues at the time. Students read Chomsky, Power, Ignatieff and Downing in addition to many competing scholars on norm-cascade theory within the US and the Balkans. Students learn about real-politick, about the idea of ethnic and historical antagonism and about different forms of intervention including, but not limited to: legal, media and military intervention. A large portion of the course focuses on the former Yugoslavia (in particular Kosovo) and interrogating the decisions made from differing ethnic, political, economic and media perspectives. Students choose a current “crisis” to focus on for the semester. They are taught interview techniques and techniques in drafting a press release. In addition to two quizzes and a reading log, students are required to write a “white-paper” recommending various intervention strategies and incorporating their interviews. Students are then required to present said “white paper” in a press conference format. The class utilizes film, art and guest speakers. -
Instructor - Human Rights: History, Ideology And SpinColumbia College Chicago Sep 2004 - May 2009“Human Rights: History, Ideology and Spin,” Three hour seminar class introducing students to the philosophy of human rights, cultural relativism, international law, human rights law, the role of the Armenian Genocide and Nuremburg, the UN structure, trans-national activist networks and media activism. Utilizing film, art and speakers the students study theorists such as An-Naim, Steiner, Alston and Sikkink in addition to about 30 other, often competing, scholars. In addition to quizzes, a project proposal and three short papers, students create a final “campaign” on a contemporary human rights issue of their choosing and are evaluated on the basis of their knowledge of relevant human rights law as well as their unique research and techniques of persuasion, creativity and presentation. Former student’s films have been shown at the Holocaust Museum in Washington DC (International Human Rights Education Consortium annual meeting), the Illinois Humanities Festival and Mundos de Mujeres 2008.
