Chief Project Coordinator

Loughborough, England, United Kingdom

I lead Loughborough UAV to compete at the IMechE Unmanned Aerial Systems Challenge 2021. I organised a team of 20 engineers to develop an autonomous aerial vehicle to complete a humanitarian aid mission. I instituted best engineering practices, testing and documentation procedures and a culture of innovation. Guiding the team through COVID-19 in a safe and reliable manner provided me with my toughest challenge to date. However, we successfully developed an aerial vehicle called Manta. This fixed wing UAV featured a blended-wing-body design, high aspect ratio wings, a rapidly deployable empennage and a novel propulsion solution. I was instrumental in the design, manufacturing, testing and optimisation of our custom electric coaxial contrarotating motor unit. This is an example of culture of that has been adopted and proved by the team after my departure. As the first Chief Project Coordinator of a new Loughborough UAV, my team and I set the foundation for future incarnations of the team to achieve victory whilst creating reliable UAVs, featuring logical innovations and all whilst having fun.The following images highlight that mistakes were made. Mistakes that led to loss of aircraft and, at times, loss of self-belief. In all instances, the team picked themselves up, figured out what went wrong and fixed the problem. We only had one successful flight and unfortunately, it was not at the competition. But when it flew, it flew well. I will take the lessons I have learnt from this experience with me throughout my whole life.
