About Shea Hess Webber

I am working as a research scientist with the HEPL solar group at Stanford University. My research involves studying the connection between the solar interior with the solar atmosphere and beyond. I will specifically be working on projects that investigate the development of inferred far-side magnetic flux images derived from time-distance helioseismology and observational methods, and using those data to improve global magnetic field modeling of the Sun.I'm also highly invested in sharing my science, whether that is with the public, students, or my fellow research scientists. I not only advise students in solar physics research, but also take my role as a mentor very seriously. Science should be accessible to ALL, and we should fully support and encourage anyone interested in participating and learning, no matter where they are in their journey. I also organize and volunteer for as many science outreach activities as I can, whether that's going into schools to talk to students, planning local STEM engagement events, or working at large scale outreach initiatives at conferences.I am devoted to the ideals of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility (DEIA). My preferred outreach audiences are underrepresented and/or under-resourced groups. My goal is to make pathways into STEM easier and more available to those who have barriers. Be the change you want to see in the world. If I know one thing to be true, it's that anyone can be a scientist.I am also very involved in Community Organization within my field. Unfortunately, individualism runs rampant in STEM -- everyone feels they must be the best and know "all the things" in order to be successful. This leaves little room for collaboration. However, collaboration is how the best science gets done. We don't (can't) know everything and it's ridiculous to think any one of us can. Scientists need each other, even if the system teaches us otherwise. Communication and visitation are VITAL and I work hard to open those channels for myself and for others.I have a deep seeded interest in Science Policy. I am not a fan of politics, but grew up in a very political environment. I also understand that without funding that comes from public policy, most scientists (including myself) would be out of a job. We need to advocate for ourselves and our work, and educate policy makers as to why our research is important. If we don't, who will?
