Jul 2024 - Present

Senior Director, R&D Software Engineering

San Diego, Ca, Us

I led the effort on building and operationally supporting the data infrastructure for bioinformatics pipelines as part of development of a novel platform leveraging NGS for QA of cutting edge therapies such as cell therapy and gene therapy. In the process I successfully navigated my team through organizational change to effectively support the software needs of this highly complex product while merging two previously separate software engineering teams.I did direct development and support of Python/Pulumi code to provide both infrastructure-as-code and configuration-as-code support for a platform to manage execution of Nextflow pipelines for the bioinformatics aspects of a comprehensive biological material analysis. This also included supporting the data science / bioinformatics teams in use of the platform and integration of the pipelines into a GitHub Actions CI process. While in this role I also managed the HPC infrastructure for the bioinformatics team, helped to organize the overall IAC management of the various parts of the system, and collaborated with other senior leaders and stakeholders on strategic planning of data management of the overall platform.

Senior Director, Digital Product Software Engineering

San Diego, Ca, Us

I built and led the Product Engineering team in the Digital organization at Resilience from the earliest stages, where my team developed innovative internal and external products. Examples included: 1/ an external multi-tenant product built on Elixir Phoenix providing a console for customers to engage on Manufacturing and Process Development activity, 2/ an external product built on Elixir Phoenix for prospective customers to interact and receive initial commercial proposal for biomanufacturing work (reducing time-to-proposal from weeks to a few days), and 3/ an internal visual IDE tool for biomanufacturing Process Development built on Nodejs.I supported my team technically consulting and mentoring on software architecture, design, and implementation, and assisting debugging in production. I established our Docker structure, our CI pipelines, use of AWS CDK, and our earliest Elixir development on the server side.As a senior leader in the organization I led and supported strategic initiatives, which included: establishing Architecture Review meeting with participation across Digital, collaborating with Security and Manufacturing infrastructure on secure networking and application architecture, supporting DevOps and an IAC-everywhere culture, championing Data Mesh approach with Data Products for managing data sharing across the organization, and development of agile SDLC in a regulated environment. As a people leader I supported my team and ensured effectiveness as well as employee growth and satisfaction. I established and ran an objective process for hiring in our team with a high-bar, established a published objective career ladder with clear expectations at each level, worked on individual plans for advancement, and mentored in all aspects of career development.

Consumer Product Projects

Created SMS-based natural language planning app using Conversational AI called A Lot Done. Users communicate in natural language to set up reminders (eg. "I need to call mom next tuesday night") or ask about their schedule (eg. "what's on my list for next week?"), and get reminded via text message at the right times. We found users who were successful with the product and liked it, but not a quick enough path to revenue to sustain the business. Built with Rasa (open source conversational AI), Elixir backend, and PostgreSQL, run on GKE.Created Mindful Journaling app called Stream in the Mental Fitness space aiming to do for mindful journaling what Calm and Headspace have done for meditation. Pulled together journaling experts, built a first version, and got early users. Built on Google Firebase and Quasar Vue.js framework.

Co-Founder & Cto

New York, Ny, Us

As CTO I drove the technical implementation and built and led the Engineering organization from scratch. We built Yieldbot into a $50M revenue business, an advertising marketplace with a worldwide footprint targeted by intent and optimized for performance between thousands of sites and advertisers. For the first year I was the sole technical role, and built out the entire first implementation through to seed funding. For the second year, post-seed, I led the technical team of four of us transforming the product for revenue at scale through to Series A. From there over the years I grew the Engineering organization to over 30 people as we scaled the company. I oversaw company IT for well over 100 users, multiple physical locations, and several remote workers. For the final two years I also led the Product organization, as we continued to innovate on creative units, transition the product to support programmatic interfaces for both supply and demand, and continued to build out capabilities driving results for foot traffic and physical store sales. Our technology spans on-page Javascript integrations, HA cloud architecture - multi-AZ multi-region, containerized services, high performance matching and ad serving, OpenRTB supply-side integrations, OpenRTB demand-side auctions, custom creative units, Kafka-based data pipeline, Elasticsearch-based data warehouse for metrics, in-house built reporting tools and configuration UIs, Spark-based batch jobs for metrics aggregations and other Data Team jobs, system monitoring with Terraform and InfluxDB, and lots of other details in between.I pride myself not just on the quality of our technology, but also on the performance and attitude of my team even under the most challenging of circumstances for the company. Engineers and Product Managers at Yieldbot always had opportunities for growth, solving challenging and interesting problems, working with great technology, and seeing the results of their work in production.

Software Architect

WaveSmith (acquired by Ciena in 2003) was a telecommunications equipment company that built core-network switch devices for ATM, Frame Relay, and MPLS.I was on the founding Engineering team as Software Architect on the embedded software team where I defined a robust runtime environment for all embedded software, designed and implemented common execution framework for all system components, provided the core software support for managing hot-pluggable hardware, and implemented key device-level drivers for network interface devices. I later moved to take over leading the Network Management team where I spearheaded refactoring a poorly functioning monolithic Java app to a modular app deployed in a J2EE application server.
