Master Thesis

Task: The goal was to evaluate the effectiveness of a virtual testing platform in the development of level 4 autonomous driving. Building 3D model of a roadmap with infrastructure and road users available in Prescan GUI, therefore, creating various traffic scenarios. Deriving small sections from the roadmap to create individual traffic test scenarios and designing tests for them with reference to ISO/EuroNCAP standards available for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). Developing an autonomous control system using ADAS systems available in Prescan software, to navigate the vehicle model in the test scenarios. Action: For better validation of the traffic scenarios, prototype of a 3D roadmap around the HAN University of Applied science was selected. This roadmap had a combination of different possible traffic scenarios which were later simplified into individual traffic scenarios and organised into separate tests. To validate the tests a vehicle model (with 3D (pitch, roll, yaw) vehicle dynamics/double track model) was introduced. Sensors (radar and camera) were mounted on the vehicle outer body to sense the road in front as shown in Figure 1. These sensors were connected to an autonomous control system (ACS) which controls the state and direction of the vehicle. Hence, manoeuvring the vehicle in the simulated traffic scenario (Figure 2).Results: The tests were validated in 2 ways first analytical calculations were made to determine the trajectory (path + speed profile) of the vehicle, second these analytical results were compared to the trajectory taken by the vehicle model during test simulations. The thesis was concluded that virtual testing is easy and an effective way to analyse if the correct autonomous function is selected for the simulated traffic scenario but, it is hard to simulate factors such as driver/passenger experience and weather influences.

Internship At Han Student Formula Team

During this internship I worked on developing the suspension system of the vehicle. Initially the roll centre of the vehicle was determined, then the static and dynamic load distribution of the vehicle on the suspension was calculated. A suspension geometry was developed and built into optimum kinematics software, here the suspension was simulated on different road and speed profiles to verify the movement of wheels and tuned to maintain optimum road tire contact patch. Further, the suspension was modelled into solid works and assembled to the vehicle body.

Developing a controller for an electronic throttle valve. Initially tests such as stalled motor resistance test, stalled motor inductance test, back electromotive force test and static load test was performed, to understand the response movement of the throttle valve for a particular value of step signal current input into the DC motor. The findings of these tests were adopted into a Matlab/Simulink model of the throttle valve and a PID controller was developed. Later, this PID controller was coded into the electronic system of the throttle valve and the controller was verified. Conclusions were made on the behaviour of the throttle valve.

This project was to determine the steady state cornering characteristics of BMW 320i HAN Test vehicle cf. ISO 4138. Firstly, the center of gravity of the host vehicle was determined to localize the position of sensors. Then sensors to measure the state of the vehicle such as roll, pitch, yaw, velocity, lateral/longitudinal acceleration and steering angle/torque was mounted on the vehicle body. All these sensors were connected to a VBOX which converted the analog signals from sensors to a digital output. The host vehicle was driven in a curved road of 40m radius with small increments in speed till the host vehicle could not hold steady state cornering in the curved road. The readings from the sensors were plotted as results and compared to ideal vehicle dynamics curves and comments were presented on the state of the host vehicle during the test.

In this project the objective was to build a smart traffic environment which could solve traffic problems that are faced in major cities nowadays. Two common issues, traffic congestion in a traffic junction and speeding in low speed zones were chosen and solution for these problems were researched. Prototype of a smart traffic signal junction was developed which could sense the traffic density of different roads connecting the junction and control the traffic lights accordingly. Also, a smart speed control system was developed which could sense the speed limit of a speed restricted area and give warning signals to the driver to follow the speed regulation. If the driver did not react to the warning, the system could manipulate the throttle and brakes to control the speed of the vehicle to the speed limit.
