At Nubinary, I worked as a fractional CTO, managing 2-3 client relationships at a time, from various industries (HVAC, MedTech, 2-sided marketplace, AI, & Mining). This was a similar dynamic to managing multiple teams in past roles, albeit with the added context switch of a different industry/company/culture.The level and breadth of engagement with each client varied from hands-on CTO, all to the way to technical advisor reviewing the client's engineering operations and products.In general, my role with a client could involve providing technical vision, designing architecture, building roadmaps, hiring, writing engineering policies, tracking teams against performance/engineering metrics, establishing good engineering culture and practices (such as Agile), mentorship, managing infra, and contributing code.Highlights:• Established Agile best practices and culture• Product Infrastructure modernization and re-architecture for modularity, scalability, cost optimization, and implementing engineering best practices (CI/CD, containerization, automated testing, application monitoring)• Modernization efforts led to significant increase in application uptime/reliability, dramatic reduction in support issues, decreased API latency, ease of use, great reduction in infra costs, reduction of tech debt and cost of future stories/epics, and automation of repetitive engineering tasks (such as CI/CD, testing)• Worked on AI products (object detection, genAI) using off-the-shelf (OTS) models and OpenAI• Performed due diligence on OTS 2-sided marketplaces & built out PoCs to meet the clients' unique requirements• Produced in-depth engineering reports on clients' teams, products, and processes (after multiple rounds of interviews, & technical due diligence of repos & infra), defining strengths, opportunities, as well as architectural strategy• Advised on risk management at all levels (team, infra, product), devOps, cybersecurity best practices, Agile culture, hiring, & so on

Digital Joy was spun out of Grass Valley, along with the teams and products I managed there as a Director, with me joining the new startup as the founding CTO.Here I managed 4 product teams (Live streaming, contesting, chat, polling & trivia), with >15 remote resources in total. Monthly traffic for these products exceeded 100K users (with the bulk coming from polling & trivia, and contesting).My role included providing technical vision, doing product demos, designing architecture, launching products, collaborating on roadmaps, hiring, writing engineering policies, tracking teams against performance/engineering metrics, mentorship for managers and ICs, managing infra, and contributing code.Highlights:• Designed and architected the next iteration of a live streaming product built at Grass Valley, with a special focus on replacing the proprietary GV video engine with one focused on low latency & scalability• Worked with team to design, architect, and develop a new trivia product, based on the existing polling offering• Collaborated in architecting core API services for all products, reducing duplication, cost, and increasing maintainability• The CEO decided to move product development to a 3rd party dev house, and I supported the knowledge transfer to make it a smooth transition

Grass Valley acquired ExciteM, the startup where I was the CTO, and I joined as the Director in charge of our product teams.I managed 4 product teams (polling, virtual events production, live streaming, and chat), with 10-15 remote resources in total. Monthly traffic for these products exceeded 100K users (with the bulk coming from events, polling, and contesting).My role included providing technical vision, designing architecture, launching products, building roadmaps, hiring, writing engineering policies, tracking teams against performance/engineering metrics, mentorship for managers and ICs, managing infra, and contributing code.Highlights:• Managed the production of dozens of virtual events, where we built out a custom virtual event platform, mixing in our suite of engagement products• Notable customers included World Education Summit, Rave Agency, National Federation of the Blind, and Covenant House• Encouraged and helped architect patterns for code reuse, increasing profitability and reducing delivery time for the events• Hired a TPM to take over day-to-day management of the events production, as well as managing the customer relationships• Led a new team to design, architect, and develop a live streaming SaaS product on top of GV's proprietary video engine• Infrastructure as code (IaC) using CloudFormation for video server orchestration

I joined ExciteM as a junior web developer in 2014, and worked my way up to CTO in 2017.During my time, I built out 3 product teams (polling, live streaming, chat), and was heavily involved in architecting and leading development for said products. By the time we were acquired by Grass Valley, we had 10 remote engineering resources in total (Developers, TPMs, QA, Designer, PM), with 100K+ monthly users for our polling product.My role included coding, hiring, designing architecture, managing infrastructure, building roadmaps, writing engineering policies, tracking teams against performance/engineering metrics, and mentorship.Highlights:• Actively worked on all products (from inception) as an independent contributor, architect, and managing infra• Hired, coached, and built multiple successful remote product teams, before remote became cool• Promoted senior engineers to manage various teams, leaving me more time to provide technical and architectural guidance• Worked with product to start tracking product metrics (UI heat maps, user journeys, user demographics/locations, sales figures, and so on)• Key team player supporting the CEO, in our successful acquisition by Grass Valley• Worked with team to setup Infrastructure as code (IaC) using serverless framework + CloudFormation to build and maintain backend for various products. This also came in handy for disaster recovery scenarios on a few occasions.

Developed a lower extremity exoskeleton for the rehab of cerebral palsy patients. Worked on everything from the mechanical design, to the machining, to the circuitry, and the software.

Background: Exinda Networks was a B2B company that specialized in building network bandwidth segmentation & optimization appliances.Highlights:• I joined Exinda right out of school, and started off in a backend team, later transitioning to the web team, which was my first exposure to web development• Some of the key features I was responsible for included a network health report scheduler, and an appliance health UI componentStack: Backbone.js, jQuery, Tcl, HTML, JS, C++

• Developed Android alert notification app to push events to BLE client devices• Written in Java using Broadcom BLE APIs • Supported alert types: New/Missed Call, unread SMS/MMS, calendar updates • Scheduled to be released open source

• Continued development on the simulation engine and front-end visualization tool

• Developed a simulation engine for modelling embedded video processing systems (i.e. decoder, encoder, transcoder) using SystemC and C++ • Captured stats on latency and hardware, bandwidth, and buffer utilization• Developed an interactive front-end using C# to visualize analytics• Automated simulation process via Perl• An invaluable tool in debugging and optimizing current/future solutions
