Behçet’s is a rare, chronic disease less than 1,000 people in the UK have been formerly diagnosed. The London Centre of Excellence has been operational for four years, the service officially opened in April 2012; it is the largest of three national Centres of Excellence and is led by Prof Farida Fortune National Clinical Lead and co-founder of the Centres of Excellence.The aim of centre is to provide care, support and treatment for patients from across England and the rest of the world, in the form of multi-disciplinary ‘one stop shop’ clinics specialising in Behçet’s Oral Medicine, Rheumatology, Ophthalmology, Immunology, Neurology and Psychology. The London Centre has recently been nominated as the centre of choice for our European paying patients where no expertise is available in their own country. Of the three centres, London offers the most diverse of the MDT teams and as such receives the majority of complex patient referrals throughout England.Senior Clinicians are regularly asked to speak at worldwide Behçet’s training events raising the profile of Barts Health NHS Trust and increasing our international paying patients’ attendees (a new patient appointment costs £1,800 and a follow-up appointment costs £880).Our Behçet’s Disease training day (funded by the service) attracts clinicians from across Europe, last year ninety clinicians attended from varied specialties for whom this was their first Behçet’s training day.We are rated excellent by the Quality Care Commission in the 2014 report and achieved 100% of our targets in 2013, 2014 and 2015, giving us an excellent status by NHSE.
