In the year after I earned my MA in English, I was hired as full-time faculty in the first year of this exciting new partnership between major universities from Japan and Canada. Ritsumeikan sent 100 students to Vancouver to study at UBC--and to lived in a sparkling new campus residence with 100 Canadian students. Those Japanese students whose TOEFL scores were high enough took at least some regular UBC courses, while most spent their first year taking some or all of their courses in our program, focused on Canadian Culture, Intercultural Communication, and Academic Reading and Writing. I helped design the new curriculum as well as teaching in the program and designing extra-curricular activities. This experience cemented my conviction that I wanted to pursue a career teaching - as well as conducting research - in higher education. -
Director And Esl InstructorVancouver English Language Center 1989 - 1990I co-directed (along with a business/budget manager) and taught for this small English Language Institute in the bustling Kitsilano neighborhood of Vancouver. The school was a non-profit venture of an urban church, housed in a business complex, that was seeking to reach out in service to the large immigrant and international populations in the area. I was responsible for all academic aspects of the school. A highlight of my year at VELC was being invited by alumni to visit them and recruit for our program in Japan, which we were able to arrange with the logistical support and generous financial sponsorship of a generous alum.

Esl InstructorPacific Language Institute 1988 - 1989This position, at a brand new, high-profile English language institute on the trendy Robson Street in downtown Vancouver, was my first job after graduating from university. It was offered to me as the result of a short student-teaching field experience that was part of an ESL course I had taken in my senior year. I taught academic writing and intermediate oral communication courses, primarily for young adult visitors from Japan, Europe, and Latin America. I learned that I loved to teach, loved working with young adults, and wanted to continue engaging with diverse cultures and world views.
