My expertise is developing large, high-fidelity optimisation models for whole-system value chains to achieve net-zero, while protecting the environment, ecosystem services and biodiversity.I obtained my PhD in Chemical Engineering from University College London, and then worked as a Research Associate at Imperial College London, and as an Assistant Professor at University of Bath. I am a Fellow of the UK Higher Education Academy.I served as one of the 15 members of the Science Expert Group of the UK Government Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), providing independent scientific and technical support to the BEIS Chief Scientific Adviser.I received the 2021 IChemE Junior Moulton Medal, which is awarded to the most meritorious paper published in all IChemE journals during the last year.I have been Principal Investigator of various projects funded by the EPSRC, BEIS, Newton Fund, STFC etc. to develop sustainable systems and value chain models for key natural and emerging resources.I have developed several software applications for optimal design, operation and planning of energy systems and value chains. For example, my Value Web Model is one of the most comprehensive spatio-temporal whole-system optimisation models for multi-sector provision of electricity, mobility, heat, chemicals and other products, modelling a wide range of technologies, infrastructures and resources. I am also a key developer of the Energy Technologies Institute’s Biomass Value Chain Model, which is being used by the ETI, BEIS and ETI’s industrial members to drive bioenergy policy in the UK. I extended the maths of the BVCM to model forestry value chains in New Zealand, and this is being used by Scion Crown Research Institute to optimise sustainable roadmaps for the use of biomass resources for biofuels and bioenergy.
