HealthGRID Sierra Leone was a USAID Global Development Alliance, a public-private partnership that included Orange SL, World Health International, RESOLVE and GAVI. The energy systems, primarily powered by solar photovoltaic technology, were sized to meet the specific needs of each health facility, with excess capacity available for use by local communities.HealthGRID Sierra Leone served as a proof of concept for USAID's Health Electrification and Telecommunications Alliance (HETA), part of Power Africa’s flagship initiative to bring electrification and digital connectivity to 10,000 health facilities across sub-Saharan Africa. HETA fosters public-private partnerships to create sustainable business models that expand access to reliable, renewable energy and digital services—essential improvements for ensuring equitable healthcare access throughout the region.
