About Shelby Bessette

Currently working as a Natural Resource Manager for the National Park Service, Padre Island National Seashore. Outside of my public lands work, I have private lands experience, including hands on land management with heavy machinery and wildlife. Private lands and Consultant work through Coastal Shelbs Conservation Services, DBA. I've worked for a few awesome nonprofits:Coastal Bend & Bays Estuaries Program as a Migratory Bird Habitat Project Leader where I worked on public and private lands with land managers to manipulate wetland flooding strategies and coordinate with partners to restore and create new freshwater wetland projects. I previously worked for Pheasants and Quail Forever as a Farm Bill Biologist in South Carolina and spent 5 years prior to that at UT Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) as a Program Manager for the South Padre Island Coastal Campus (Coastal Studies Lab, est. 1973). I received my M.S. in Biology in 2016 and MPA in 2021 from UTRGV. In 2016-2017 before returning to UTRGV as staff, I worked for a non-profit called the Texas Wildlife Association as an Education Program Contractor. Under the Conservation Legacy Program, I provided services for K-8 grade schools in Denton, Wise, and Collin counties, teacher workshops, and participated in other events.Also a Protected Species Observer and certified Advanced Diver.
