As an assistant, I obtain the medical history of the patient during the appointment and report to the veterinarian. I help the veterinarian during the appointment by restraining the patient so the doctor can do a thorough physical examination. After a diagnosis and/or treatment plan is created by the veterinarian, I go over the details and cost of the treatment and answer any questions that the client has. I thoroughly explain how and when to administer medications and explain to the client the treatment and/or diagnostic plan going forward. At the end of the appointment I process the payment for all services rendered or set up a payment arrangement with the client. If necessary, I then schedule any follow up appointments. In this position I also administer specific drugs and vaccinations, perform minor venipuncture, fill medications, and handle and restrain dogs and cats. I help the Registered Veterinary Technicians prepare animals for surgery and help monitor patients during surgical procedures. I monitor patients post-operatively, extubate them, and perform certain post-operative treatments. I also help the Registered Veterinary Technicians perform radiographs. I help with laundry and keeping the facility clean and organized. I help the Customer Service Representatives answer phones and schedule appointments from time to time as well.
