Profile bio

About Shelby Keith

I am incredibly injury-prone. This unfortunate trait combined with my love of soccer helped me discover my passion for science and medicine. Single-handedly meeting my family's deductible for 4 years led to quite a few hours spent in hospitals and ignited my interest in improving access to medical care.During college, I pursued a Public Health B.S. which allowed me to tackle project management and systems improvement opportunities throughout my undergrad. I revived an on-campus organization that fundraised for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, doubling participation and increasing fundraising/sales by 75%. I volunteered at a Spanish-speaking free clinic where I streamlined administrative protocols to increase the number of patients seen by 25%. I also served as a research assistant in the Communication Sciences and Disorders department where I authored a research poster and educated local Speech-Language Pathologists on best practices in supporting bilingual learners' language development. In my 2 years post-graduation, I worked as a middle school science teacher in Title 1 schools through Teach for America. Guiding students through a pandemic, political upheavals, race relation discussions, and personal losses on top of all of the other angst and worries that come with being a middle schooler was the most challenging responsibility and humbling experience I have ever had. Teaching taught me that I am much tougher than I ever imagined and that middle school students WILL call you out when you aren't practicing what you preach.Though my background appears disjointed, I hope a few things are very clear:- I have a passion for working with people and facilitating growth.- I am an extremely efficient and effective learner who is always seeking improvement.- I never back down from a challenge.

Listed skills include Leadership, Microsoft Office, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and 2 others.

Undergraduate Research Assistant

Columbia, South Carolina, United States

Undergraduate research assistant in Literacy Development Among Diverse Learners (LDDL) Lab, Arnold School of Public Health- Communication Sciences and Disorders. Worked in collaboration with Lexington 2 School District and Riverbank Elementary to provide diagnostic testing for communication disorders to over 200 students ages 5 - 7. Assessed students using the BESA and CLOZE test to evaluate bilingual learners and work with school members to provide early interventions to students. While providing assessments to students, our research lab was simultaneously testing the accuracy and validity of the tests on bilingual learners. Most communication disorders diagnostic testing was designed for monolingual learners and bilingual learners have been historically over-diagnosed or under-diagnosed with communication disorders. While working at the LDDL lab, I was able to present the partnership model at South Carolina Speech Language Hearing Association conference in 2020 in order to inform SLPs and researchers on learning environment supports and language supports to assist all bilingual learners in schools.I created user-friendly content for teachers and parents of bilingual learners to support the growth and language development of bilingual learners.
