My name is Shelby Rorrer, I am a student of animal science at Berry College in Mount Berry, GA. I grew up on a farm caring for show horses, many rescue cats and egg-producing chickens. I have always had a strong interest in animals of all types, wild or domestic. I have spent all four years of my time at Berry College working for the main grounds crew, maintaining the beauty of the campus. Berry College is often ranked in top 3 most beautiful campus lists and it is not uncommon for the campus to be ranked #1. At this job I often guide new workers towards what needs to be done.My second job was started in May of 2018, working as a sheep barn employee for Berry College. At this job I work alongside 10 other workers to ensure the health, happiness, and safety of over 100 Katahdin sheep. From breeding to selling, lambs are cared for and treated for any problems when necessary.My third job was started shortly after the sheep barn job in May of 2018. In this job I work under Dr. George Gallagher to research white-tail deer. We did three projects and I will be the main author of one research papers on them, and a coauthor on a second. We will be doing poster presentations at the Wildlife Damage Management Conference 2019 and Berry Scholarship Symposium 2019. This job ignited a passion for research that I wished I had discovered earlier in my time at Berry. In this job I became skilled with both a microscope, doing fecal parasite egg counts, and with Microsoft Office, producing graphs, documenting data, and creating posters. With all three of my current jobs I have learned much and am happy to have been able to have the experience of working them. They have helped me discover industries I would like to work in and my own passions: animals and scientific research.
