I interviewed coastal and marine policy makers and resource managers in Washington about barriers they face when working with scientists. The outcome from this work contributed to the establishment of a scientist and decision-maker network in Oregon. Additionally, I conducted phone surveys of the general public to gauge their perceptions of marine reserves in Oregon.

I gained hands-on experience in aquaculture from daily feeding, water quality (e.g. pH, DO, TAN), and maintenance of ponds and tanks. The research centered on testing plant-based diets on fish and shrimp, and I was involved with the weekly collecting and weighing of species from the nursery to grow-out phase.

Huinay, Chile

During my time in Latin America, I completed a 3-month internship where I identified invertebrates of Chilean Patagonia through photos taken on prior expeditions. I also assisted various researchers visiting Huinay with data collection; this included sampling, and mapping the aquaculture activity-- mussel and salmon facilities--of the fjord through ArcGIS.

To better educate the public on the origins, and practices, around seafood, I developed, presented and the created the promotional material for an educational tour at one of Sydney’s popular seafood markets. Here, I provided background on the biology, capture and production methods, and environmental issues or common seafood products. Attendees gained a more well-rounded understanding of how environmental organizations evaluate and rank seafood products--and how fisheries and aquaculture facilities are certified.
