I’ve been working on a website (www.sheldonberman.com) to share some of what I’ve written over the years as well as some of the exciting work that was accomplished in the districts in which I’ve served. It is still in an early stage of development and will eventually include more material and links to organizations that I believe are making a significant contribution to education. Dr. Sheldon Berman served as superintendent for five and a half years, receiving two contracts after serving as interim for the 2015-16 school year. In 2016, he launched a new strategic plan focused on innovation and authentic learning through maker spaces, project-based learning, universal design for learning, and inquiry-based approaches to instruction. To address significant reading issues in the district, he initiated comprehensive early identification, intervention, and progress monitoring to identify and address early reading difficulties such as dyslexia. He also initiated the development of a long-range facilities plan to address longstanding facilities issues that resulted in a partnership with the Massachusetts School Building Authority to replace an elementary school and a preschool and in the development of a feasibility to study for renovations to the high school. As a result of these efforts, the district was acknowledged statewide and nationally, not only for academic progress in reading and addressing dyslexia, but also for implementing an exemplary social-emotional learning program and innovations in personalized learning.

Superintendent of the Eugene School District in Eugene, Oregon, from 2011 to 2015. Led the district to undertake a number of improvements, particularly at the high school level, designed to increase graduation rates and promote college and career readiness for all students. Initiated a new teacher evaluation system and in-depth professional development program designed to foster professional growth. Cultivated a diagnostic approach to instruction that incorporates and benefits from teacher collaboration. Secured passage of a local option levy as well as a $170 million capital bond to replace four schools and provide new technology and curricula. Serve on the Vision & Policy Coalition and the Funding Coalition of the Oregon Association of School Executives, and co-authored a report presented to the Oregon Education Investment Board on key investments in Oregon’s future. Co-Chaired a COSA task force on Re-Imagining Grades 9-14 to support seamless transitions between high school and post-secondary education.

Louisville, Ky, Us

Superintendent of the Jefferson County (Louisville, KY) Public Schools from 2007 to 2011, the 28th largest school district in the United States. Managed the development of a new student assignment plan that ensured integration and equitable access for all students. Initiated a plan to more effectively drive curricular reform and promote innovation throughout the system. Strengthened the mathematics and science curriculum through the implementation of inquiry-based instruction. Initiated the creation of a major restructuring of high schools involving freshman academies, trimester schedules, career-theme magnet programs, and advisory programs to better support student engagement and success and to personalize the high school environment. Launched a multi-year initiative, entitled CARE for Kids, focused on the development of students’ social skills and the fostering of caring classroom and school communities. Initiated a “nurses in schools” effort that began with increasing community and legislative awareness of the need to improve student health. Strengthened the quality of instruction through an extensive support and coaching network, formative assessment, and support for teacher collaboration.

Hudson, Ma, Us

Superintendent of the Hudson (MA) Public Schools, serving 3000 students from culturally and socio-economically diverse backgrounds. Initiated curricular innovations in mathematics and science reform, high school restructuring, early childhood education, service learning, civic education, and the use of technology. As a result the district won numerous national and state awards. Provided the entrepreneurial management that increased competitive grants and donations to over $1.6 million per year and the leadership to help Hudson become a recognized leader in research and development in instructional improvement.
