Shell Jones, Executive Director and founder of Play-Place Autism & Special Needs Center and mother of a 16-year old son affected by autism, is a visionary leader driven by the premise that children challenged by autism and other special needs are simply “differently abled.” Her goal is to provide comfort, affordability, advocacy, and hope with the ultimate ambition of making a difference. As a parent and education enthusiast, Shell’s efforts are focused on education creatively disguised by “fun”, increased awareness of resources and a judgment-free safe-haven for both the affected individual and their family. Her continued emphasis is the development of Play-Place’s commission and design: programming for ALL ages, parent connections, community partnerships and vocational training.Shell attended Detroit public schools and received her BA in English from Wayne State University in 1992. She is a proud member of the Shelby-Utica Kiwanis Club, Sterling Heights Chamber and (NAWBO) National Association of Women Business Owners. Mrs. Jones is the 2018 GUS Awards recipient for the Sustainability and Standards in Social Enterprise, 2017 Michiganian of the Year award recipient, 2014 awardee of National Association of Women Business Owner’s Giving Spirit honor and award recipient of Crain’s 2014 Salute to Entrepreneurs.
