Colleagues describe her as "I had the pleasure of working with Shelley Johnson in a number of roles at Sylvan Learning and can attest to her exceptional instructional design, project management, and communication skills. Whether developing curricula as a part of a project team or managing the implementation of a new education program, Shelley could be relied on to bring passion to the job, achieve meaningful results, and do the right thing always. As a teammate, Shelley was the rare individual who could produce phenomenal work independently, but who thrived on more collaborative projects. Shelley also positively used her coaching skills and team lead skills to ensure her team members achieved performance goals and developed skills to be even more effective at their jobs. I highly recommend Shelley for her skills, experience, and passion. " and "I have worked with Shelley in many different capacities. In 2003, Shelley was one of my trainers in Baltimore when I attended Director Training for Sylvan. Her passion, commitment, knowledge and dynamic delivery was one of the motivations for me to go back to my center, implement my learnings and strive to be an expert so that I could "be her" one day. In 2005, I moved to Baltimore and became a training manager. By this time, Shelley had moved into more of the "building and designing" of training and was a key expert on multiple project teams. Adult learning is a hard nut to crack and Shelley always made sure the objectives, content, activities and learning outcomes were top of mind in every training module whether it was face to face in person, live virtual (using different video platforms) or an LMS. She was an integral part in launching the LMS and it is still being used today. I enjoyed being on any project team that Shelley led. She was patient, efficient with time and effective with her leadership. We all knew expectations and delivery timelines. Meetings were on task, relevant and fun. After leaving Sylvan in 2013, I was lucky enough to work with Shelley again in 2015 at Quad Learning. My job is to oversee an honors program at several community colleges across 3 states. Shelley was on the team that provided curriculum development for "honorizing" the courses and providing professional development to the faculty. I had many difficult honors faculty. They would miss deadlines and wait until the night before the start of class to ask for help. No one wanted to work with my campuses. In her first month, Shelley made it a priority to visit my schools and made herself available all day. She facilitated a "Lunch and Learn" and reviewed areas that she could assist and gave some resources for them to use in their classrooms. Her approach was collaborative, yet kept the content expertise in their corner. I couldn't believe the attitude adjustment and re-engagement of the faculty with our Teaching and Learning Center. Faculty became more apt to share lesson plans and engage in best practice sharing. Shelley not only turned around faculty commitment but also the TLC team. Team members were spread across the country and not only were treated like silos but acted like them as well. Within weeks of Shelley taking on the leadership role of the team, I heard comments like "Where has she been?", "This is the first time in 2 years I felt like I was part of a team." Shelley has a knack for really listening, facilitating discussion and leading while empowering her team and holding them accountable. She was able to showcase their talents and wins to the company and made sure they no longer worked in silos. In my 10 years of professional engagement with Shelley, I have only heard people rave about her professionalism, honesty, hard work, excellent outcomes and personable spirit. She is a huge asset to any team!"
