CeoUnited Way Of Peel Region Sep 2003 - Feb 2017Mississauga, Ontario, CaIn 2003, Shelley became President and CEO, United Way Peel Region, which was at the time recovering from bankruptcy. Over the next decade, Shelley restored its reputation by providing groundbreaking direction and leadership to the board and staff, building it up to a $16 million dollar organization with a multi-disciplinary team of 40 employees and over 2000 volunteers. Among the initiatives that Shelley was most proud of was United Way’s leadership in Peel Region’s adoption of Success By 6, a community partnership dedicated to offering children a good start in life so that by the time they begin kindergarten, children are ready to learn. This is important because the research shows that this is vital to build better futures for kids. With Canada being such a diverse country, Shelly was also honoured to take a leading role in the development of the Peel Newcomer Strategy Group. This was the first federally funded local integration partnership, and the model was so successful that the federal government implemented it across Canada. This partnership also made It possible for Peel Region to quickly come to the aid of 1500 Syrian refugees arriving in the community in 2016 providing them with support, such as counseling, housing and transportation to help them integrate into their new home. As a result of this leadership, in 2016 the United Way Peel Region received the UW Worldwide Common Good Award that recognizes outstanding accomplishments in advancing social change through strong collaborations across a variety of sectors to enhance the integration and inclusion of newcomers to Canada. -
