About Shelley E. Brown, Phd, Mdiv

In 2014, Shelley Brown completed ministerial training in an M.Div. program at Harvard Divinity School, and in 2015, completed a postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Biological Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. As a result of her scientific training and ethics and policy education, Shelley then accepted a position as a AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellow at the NIH's National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences. Currently, Shelley is a Medical Science Liaison at Vericel Corporation. Prior to her training in Boston, Shelley received a bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from Stanford University, and a Masters and PhD in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Michigan. Her doctoral work focused on the use of human embryonic stem cells for clinical tissue engineering strategies, and due to the ethical and religious debate surrounding stem cells, she was challenged to determine the religious implications of her research. As a result, while in the doctoral program, Shelley became a licensed minister in the Baptist tradition in 2010. In the M.Div. program Shelley studied the intersection of the academic study of science and religion, probing religious and bioethical issues surrounding policy and research, while pursuing postdoctoral research within the biological engineering community at MIT. As a AAAS Fellow, Shelley combined passion with her skill set in science, policy, and ethics to develop policies that translate new biomedical technologies to the clinic safely, effectively, and efficiently. Now as a Medical Science Liaison in Medical Affairs at Vericel Corporation, Shelley serves as a scientific resource in the Cell Therapy and Regenerative Medicine (CTRM) space within the field of Orthopedics and Sports Medicine.

    Postdoctoral Research Associate
Massachusetts Institute Of Technology (Mit) Sep 2013 - Jun 2015
    Cambridge, Ma
Examining the effects of pro-apoptotic cytokines IFNγ and TRAIL on the hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cell line Huh7 for clinical cancer therapeutics. Research goals include investigating the role that microRNAs (miRNAs) play in intracellular signaling networks that regulate cell phenotype and behavior. Through qRT-PCR validation of selected miRNAs that are differentially expressed in response to treatment, and global miRNA sequencing data, correlations between changes in miRNA expression and cell phenotype can be drawn. Upon validation, downstream miRNA gene targets can be identified to further provide insight into the signaling pathways that may be triggered. Via quantitative methods, a predictive mathematical model to describe cell behavior in response to combinatorial pro-apoptotic treatment can be developed.
  • Western Avenue Baptist Church
Associate Minister, Youth And Young Adult Minister
Western Avenue Baptist Church Sep 2011 - Jun 2015
    Cambridge, Ma
In this ministry position I have had the opportunity to serve as a worship leader, youth and young adult minister, and associate preacher. Additionally as an associate minister at Western Avenue, we have been a founding participant of the Seeds of Hope Mentoring Program. In collaboration with Harvard Medical School and Wheaton College, we have helped organize workshops where HMS faculty and medical students educated interested high school and college students from our church and other Cambridge area churches about careers in STEM fields.

As the Mustard Seed Campus Ministry Co-Director from 2008-2010, I assisted in teaching bible study on campus every week and worked with students to organize campus-wide ministry outreach events, fun college fellowship activities, prayer vigils, and yearly college day services held at Second Baptist Church. It was the fulfillment and joy I felt through this outreach to students that invoked a deep passion for ministry and community service. From there I began teaching our youth Sunday school classes, as well as an adult Sunday school course as apart of our church's Christian Education curriculum. In March 2010, I became a licensed Baptist minister and served as an associate minister until I entered seminary in August 2011.
  • University Of Michigan
    Graduate Student Research Assistant
University Of Michigan Sep 2006 - Aug 2011
    Ann Arbor, Mi
Conducted research on the osteogenic potential of human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) for bone tissue engineering applications. Research goals included directing differentiation of hESCs along an osteoblastic lineage via derivation of mesenchymal stem cell progenitors (hES-MSCs), isolating osteoprogenitors via lineage specific transgenes, and delivering the cells in vivo on designed osteoconductive HA-TCP ceramic biomaterials. HA-TCP scaffolds were designed and fabricated with varying permeability and pore interconnectivity to determine the effects on in vivo bone formation of delivered hES-MSCs and hBMSCs. To evaluate the extent of differentiation, RT-PCR, histochemical and immunofluorescent analyses were conducted. Further 3D bone formation analysis included qRT-PCR, fluorescence activated cell sorting (FACS), histology, and micro-computerized tomography.
  • Corn Products International, Inc.
