The Seward Family Digital Archive
The William Henry Seward Papers is the largest and most frequently cited manuscript collection in University of Rochester’s Rare Books, Special Collections, and Preservation Department. The Seward project digitizes, transcribes, and annotates letters from the Seward Family, and makes them available on a pubic website. This digital humanities project has made the letters, which describe daily life in the nineteenth century over the course of decades, searchable by keyword, annotated the people mentioned within them and created a database with biographical information, all available to students, researchers, and the general public. The Seward Family Archive also involves the unique aspect of being a multi-generational digital humanities project, recruiting and training retiree citizen volunteers, whose expertise deciphering challenging handwriting is paired with students' knowledge of the technology and time period.
