The learning curve has been incredible and working in this city has been an enlightening experience for which I am thankful.While working in the Planning and Zoning Division, my duties included telephone and counter customer service, preparing zoning verification letters, preparing zoning reports for rezoning requests, preparing reports and PowerPoint presentations for the Zoning Board of Adjustment and presenting them at the public hearings. From my work experience in that department, I gained practical knowledge about many current planning issues; zoning, land use, variances, and most of all, the importance of clear and understandable communication with city officials and residents. The Development Services Department is a One Stop Shop and I took the opportunity to transition into the Project Management Division to expand my professional experience. As a project manager, I was a liaison and facilitated the process of planning and permitting projects. My job started with early assistance for property owners, developers and builders. I was the primary contact throughout the entire process of submission, plan review, permitting, and inspections until the project received its Certificate of Occupancy. This has augmented my knowledge base so I have a better understanding of what it takes to bring projects to fruition and the steps involved, from consistency with a Comprehensive Plan and zoning and platting regulations to windstorm, flood plain and building requirements. I enjoyed the creativity and chance to learn while helping people, which is the reason I became a planner. The challenges presented to me gave me the chance to manage and implement solutions on a case by case basis. Show less
