I started my career at Islington Mill as a fresh graduate and now over a decade later I'm honoured to be on the Board of this truly unique organisation. The art world to me before the Mill was white cubed galleries with expensive cafes - it was clean and clinical and seemed too often to contradict the art that was on display. The Mill was the first example of an artist led space I've ever come across - rough, energetic, DIY and spontaneous. It's a rare space where artists are allowed too and are actively encouraged to take risks and experiment. In my role as a Board Member I am dedicated to making sure Islington Mill keeps opening its doors and keeps building its community which has always been a curious, joyful, welcoming, respectful and generous one - one that provides both a safety net and a spring board for artists - support when things are hard, reassurance that it's ok to try things out and a boost of confidence to keep going.
