Taught independently for two weeks (to include one period of Physical Science and two periods of Forensic Science). Designed a five-week Earth Science unit, spanning topics from Earth’s formation, plate tectonics, volcanoes, and earthquakes. Unit included a guest speaker who taught students about earthquake preparedness in the Pacific Northwest, as well as a local field trip to teach students about the geology of the Rogue Valley. Taught a period of physical science during third trimester, and in doing so supported schoolwide initiatives to incorporate technology and Claim, Evidence, and Commentary Framework into the classroom. Rewrote content for students on a MAP (Modified Academic Program) to aid in their understanding of the concepts of air pressure and Bernoulli’s Principle. Created an anonymous student questionnaire to survey: a) reasons why students do not turn in their work and b) steps both teachers and students can take to increase student success. Developed a Kahoot quiz for over five hundred 5th graders, providing them and their teachers a digital format in which to test knowledge of scientific concepts.

Taught independently for two weeks, including a two-day inquiry lesson in which students learned about the cause of ocean acidification and its effect on mollusk populations. Partnered with ELL specialist to incorporate science curriculum into ELL classroom. Collaborated with PLC to create instructional documents for teachers to give to students when creating their digital portfolios. Implemented “Question Box” in classroom. Students used this box to submit questions that were indirectly related to the lessons. In return, they would receive printed articles which answered their question.

Caught, washed, and interpreted the lithology of 20’-40’ drilling samples. Tested for the presence of hydrocarbons in drilling samples. Digitally recorded the lithology and description of drilling samples, including any presence of hydrocarbons. Monitored the concentration of gases during drilling. Issued daily and hourly reports to oil companies and company men.

Projects:• Intro to GIS:a. Recorded waypoints of benchmarks on the OSU campus and the polygon coordinatesof nearby buildings using a Garmin eTrex Legend. Used the recorded GPS coordinates to map the location of waypoints and created polygons in place of the building locations.b. Created a fly-through animation in ArcScene.• Cartography:a. Created a reference map of the OSU campus to demonstrate the use of proper cartographic techniques.• Remote Sensing:a. Used LANDSAT data imaged over the course of several years to track and measure therecession of the Aletsch Glacier (Swiss Alps) in ENVI. • Python Programming: a. Created and installed a geoprocessing tool that can calculate the area of a delineated watershed with the use of user-defined parameters and a user-specified DEM (Digital Elevation Model) file.

I completed 47 credits of graduate-level coursework in the fields of geology, geophysics, and planetary atmospheres. At the same time, I assisted in research on two separate projects related to geochemistry, igneous petrology, volcanology, and geodynamics. Both of these tasks were accomplished at the same time, while also teaching undergraduate geology labs (0.4 FTE).

Created and polished thick sections for Scanning Electron Microscopy. Separated mineral grains from rock specimens under a plain-light microscope in preparation for high-pressure experiments (which used a Diamond Anvil Cell apparatus). Peak-fitted and analyzed x-ray diffraction spectra from high-pressure rock deformation experiments. Archived notes, data, graphs, and interpretations of previous experiments in both hard-copy and digital format. Built and developed a website using Adobe Dreamweaver (http://faculty.unlv.edu/pburnley) to display supervisor’s past and ongoingresearch. Taught supervisor how to use Adobe Dreamweaver and maintain research website.

Researched and charted water rights along the Muddy and Virgin Rivers in Nevada and Utah. Measured depth to water of wells using electronic measuring tape. Gauged rivers, streams, and irrigation ditches using electronic flow meters. Leveled streams using a surveying level and rod. Tracked Snotel (snow pack measurement) sites in ArcGIS. Served in the Land Reclamation Project of the Warm Springs Natural Area, Nevada: Surveyed previously abandoned land by trekking through overgrown brush.
