We aim to raise awareness of ageing within the specific economic and socio-cultural structures of the MENA region. I lead a number of research streams revolving around ageing, long term care, demographic changes, migration and workforce dynamics. Prioritising and managing time in order to lead several projects while ensuring the intellectual rigor of research methods and application. Managing and overseeing different teams, including from outside the academic circle when outsourcing some research activities, financial resources ensuring progress, reaching milestones during agreed timeframe and completion of several national studies. My role entails considerable liaison and communication with the Department of Health and other governmental departments when agreeing a work plan relevant to policy priorities and further discussing policy implications of findings. I actively seek external competitive funding opportunities either as PI or CI, collaborating with multi-disciplinary teams; taking either an overall responsibility of planning and co-ordinating the application process or leading on specific elements of the proposal and seeking support from relevant stakeholders including policy, the third sector and other organisations. I sustain a strong track record of academic publications and maintain a wide international network. I am a member of a number of governmental advisory boards. My duties involve high level of administration activities including appraising staff and managing large teams. I teach at a number of postgraduate courses and mentor other members of staff.

Consultancy on the Competing Demands for Women’s Labor: the Role of Women in LTC Provision in the Russian Federation My work involved:i) Producing projected demographic trends for the sizes of the Russian female population at different ages and the potential supply of labor for the next 30 years; using labor participation rates estimate the potential supply of female labor for the next 30 years; ii) Reviewing previous/ historical labor force participation rates for Russian women and how these will match the available labor force supplied in the next 30 years; how much will participation rates have to be raised to meet the demand for labor caused by population shrinkage and aging; iii) Conducting a simulation of the effect of increased labor force participation on Russian labor supply and whether increased participation will be sufficient to cover any potential shortages;iv) Using existing data sets such as the NOBUS and the Generations and Gender data to examine the role of women in LTC provision including the various forms of LTC; how many women participate in institutional/ residential LTC? Home based care? Formal care and informal care? v) Reviewing global evidence [Europe+Japan+Australia] and estimating the costs of LTC and the earnings women receive for formal/ informal provision of LTC.vi) Describing, using examples from other countries in Western Europe, Japan and Australia, how women balance their dual role as participants in the labor market and also as care takers of their families.vii) Exploring the range of policies adopted in some European countries that remove barriers and allow women to balance increasing demand for their labor with family responsibilities including for long term elder care; viii) Discussing examples from OECD in policy options to provide financial returns for informal care givers; with examples of coping mechanisms and how women balance work and LTC provision.

This international fellowship was awarded for one year to contribute to a larger project examining nuptially transition and changing family patterns in the Middle East. The fellowship allowed me to continue my PhD at the LSE while simultaneously contributing to this wider project. My role involved contributing papers and discussion briefings based on my PhD research at several international workshops and meetings. The conceptual framework on factors influencing changes in family formation patterns in the MENA region, which I have developed during my PhD, shaped some of the analysis of the wider project.

This was an internationally competitive fellowship that enabled me to start my PhD research at the LSE. My duties were to carry out my research studies towards my PhD to high standards and communicate progress and final report to the Population Council, New York.

Cairo/Middle East

I have worked as part of the Pan Arab Project for Child Development (PAPCHILD), which was funded by the United Nations and conducted by the League of Arab Sates Headquarters in Cairo. The PAPCHILD was established to implement new national surveys with a focus on child and maternal health in several Arab countries (different from the main focus on reproductive health of the Demographic and Health Survey). I was involved, through various research and management activities, in four country surveys: Egypt, Algeria, Syria and Sudan. Specific tasks depended on the stage of each country survey; for Egypt, I was mainly engaged in analysis and writing up; for Sudan, I was involved in overseeing the data manipulation stage to ensure data quality and prepare datasets for further analysis including some programming tasks. For Algeria, I was collaborating with other researchers from Algeria to conduct comparative analysis with a focus on child immunisation and marriage and for Syria I was involved in training staff responsible for data collection tasks and in implementing data collection computer interface. My responsibilities also included collaborating with other international researchers analysing and writing up with particular focus on Nuptiality and Family Planning chapters. My work involved travelling to different Arab countries to conduct workshops, capacity building meetings and delivering trainingfor PAPCHILD researchers and data users.

During my work at the Population council West Asia and North Africa regional office, I was focusing in particularly on child and maternal morbidity and mortality research. The project was quantitative in nature, examining factors (such as socio-economic factors and access to health interventions) influencing child and maternal health outcomes. I was involved in data analysis using several rounds of the Demographic and health surveys for Egypt. My duties involved performing statistical and demographic analyses using statistical software; organising and contributing to workshops; conducting literature reviews and writing briefings and preliminary reports.
