About Sherman Williams

Williams was one of several editors sent to Grand Forks, ND by Knight-Ridder during the Red River flood as a relief editor at the Grand Forks Herald. The Herald’s coverage won a Pulitzer Prize in the Public Service category. As suburban photo editor at The Philadelphia Inquirer he supervised the regional photography staffs coverage of the murder of wrestler Dave Schultz by millionaire John DuPont and subsequent standoff with police. The story was a finalist for a Pulitzer Prize in spot news. Williams is one of several editors recognized for his work by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel for a six-month series on Chronic Wasting Disease, a finalist in the explanatory journalism category for The Pulitzer Prize. Williams has been a guest faculty member at the American Press Institute and The Maynard Institute teaching picture editing, ethics and covering diverse communities. He has judged the University of Missouri Pictures of the Year International contest, the Society for News Design The Best of Newspaper Design competition and the 3rd Annual China International Press Photo contest, and a juror for The Pulitzer Prizes. He is a member of the competition committee for the Best of Photojournalism contest. He is a fellow of Newspaper Association of America The James K. Batten Leadership Program. Williams is a founding board member of the Associated Press Photo Managers and has served as president and vice-president of the organization. APPM is a national organization of managers or leadership-level people responsible for overseeing photography at newspapers and magazines in the United States and Canada.
