Real (At Risk) Educator (Reaching Every Adolescent Learner)Warrensburg R-Vi 2015 - Aug 2021Whshttp://sherrirusch.weebly.comPhilosophy: My job is my passion, and I strive to treat students as if they were my own. I have over 18 years of teaching experience with a focus on executive function, relationship building, and language skills. Each one of my students has unique and amazing qualities that bring a smile to my face. I enjoy interacting with them and developing trusting relationships as we journey together to reveal their talents. My students know that I have high expectations for them and will hold them accountable with the goal of letting their light shine. A wise mentor once offered great advice, "Love unconditionally, forgive, don't take things personally, and do what's best for the kids." ~S.Dillingham. Each new day, I wake filled with gratitude for the chance to make new connections. We are all stronger when we pull together!Education, Awards, Experience & Current Role: In 1998, I completed my B.S. graduating Summa Cum Laude from UCM. My M.S. in Speech-Language Patholgy came next and my job as a Warrensburg R6 SLP at the high school followed. While working as an SLP for 15 years, I incorporated technology and created for-credit classes designed to more effectively and efficiently serve my students. For 15 years, I worked as the National Honor Society Advisor. In 2007, I began including therapy dogs in my work with students and earned the 2008 International Beyond Limits Award in AAT Practing Professional. When the 2015 school year began, I stepped into my role as the instructor for the R.E.A.L. (reaching every adolescent learner) program, which is an on campus class focusing on the special needs of at-risk (or as I like to say, "at-hope) students. REAL is part of our school's Pyramid of Interventions. Earning essential credits to not only graduate, but to graduate with their peers is the main goal of REAL. However, REAL is more than this. REAL is also about creating opportunities for positive social interactions and cultivating trust.
