I spent my middle school summers either on a roof, shingling, or in a roof, insulating alongside my identical twin. While that experience jump-started my home improvement skill set, a high-school drafting class piqued my interest in the design side of the construction trade. During that class, I drafted a house plan for a two-story duplex, which impressed my father so much, he bought the blueprint from me. He then hired me to help build it during my college summer break. So at age 19, I had my first design-build job!When my sister and I weren't pounding nails, we were hitting the hardwood as basketball teammates, following each other to the same college where our 5'1" statures welcomed the challenge. I learned quickly after college that a desk job wasn't going to fulfill me, so I joined the first class of AmeriCorps to swing a hammer for Habitat for Humanity in Philadelphia. I was later recruited back to lead their first Women Build - one of my most challenging and rewarding endeavors and a true example of the power of teamwork.
