About Sherry Duncan
I am a Metis educator and elder with over 38 years of extensive experience from early learning and childcare to post-secondary education through various roles including; teacher, administrator, facilitator, RCSD manager, classroom support teacher, Child Care Center Director and curriculum developer.I am currently working with Norquest College to bring a unique delivery model to support students who live in First Nation's communities of Treaty 8. We are now supporting our second cohort to achieve their academic goals by taking the Early Learning and Child Care Certificate. The curriculum is supplemented by the addition of Indigenous knowledge and related course work. My career in post secondary has spanned 18 years. I served as an instructor and the Chair of Childhood Studies for 9 years at Keyano College. During this time, I worked closely with the childcare centers in Fort McMurray as practicum consultant, professional development leader, learning coach, and a principle developer for innovative delivery. I received the Faculty Leadership Award in recognition of my work in the field. .My research is motivated by understanding the many layered complexities of the family. One of the complexities includes providing a safe space for children arriving with varied familial experiences. Resilient children require culturally rich, trauma informed, consistent, developmentally appropriate and reliable childcare. As a leader in Early Childhood, I have attended local, provincial and national conferences as both participant and presenter. I consistently bring current knowledge and research to my students, colleagues, and other professionals. I am a lifelong learner and a passionate advocate for quality childcare.
