A once weekly after-school program at Morley Elementary School, Community Friends Learning Together provides a safe space for newcomer students facing social and academic difficulties to grow and build positive relationships with one another, while at the same time devleoping their literacy skills. Fostered inclusion between students by implementing an attachment model in collaboration with the school Connect Worker. Designed and facilitated literacy and social-emotional learning based activities. Participated in bi-annual volunteer recruitment through interviewing potential volunteers, screening references, facilitating training sessions, and providing on-going volunteer support. Attended recruitment fairs and marketed volunteer opportunities with Community Coordinator.

Burnaby, Bc

An award winning research project, Friends of Simon provides literacy support in after-school programs for immigrant/refugee children and youth, with goals of promoting healthy relationship building, social well-being, and positive behavioural management. Liased with community stakeholders, such as the Multicultural Family Centre, the South Burnaby Neighbourhood House, Byrne Creek Secondary School, and Edmonds Elementary School. Spearheaded the planning of site activities to address the needs of students. Facilitated communication between tutors, site coordinators, and program staff. Managed a team of 2-5 tutors at each program, while ensuring expectations were met.

Supervised and led activities for up to 20 campers aged 11-18. Co-taught 3 hour English language lessons three times per week. Constructed lessons to target learner needs by connection grammar with Canadian culture. Ensured the safety and well-being of campers during twice weekly field trips.

Tri-Cities, Port Moody Secondary

Co-facilitated a 16 session program for 18 youth aged 12-17 referred by School District #43 Settlement Workers. Participants were referred on the basis of requiring support in connecting to the school system and surrounding community. Created activities to cover topics such as social support, employment skills, bullying, conflict resolution, and self-awareness. Collaborated with SUCCESS counsellors to provide an Art Therapy session for participants. Received 1.5 hours of clinical supervision bi-monthly with a Family and Youth Counsellor. Co-compiled a 19 page comprehensive report, including case and session observations, program recommendations, and findings. Participated in PQI accreditation documentation, such as session reports, and statistical outcome measurements.
