I've worked in and around Canada's public education systems for nearly 40 years, as a classroom teacher, curriculum consultant, graduate student, teacher educator and policy geek. Even though I've been officially "retired" for a decade, I can't seem to look away from what is happening (and not happening) in Canadian education and, specifically, public education! In December 2016, I gave birth to voicEd Radio as an attempt to affect the way we talk about education. And that is what I've been doing, day in and day out, for the past 6 years. And, you know what? Every day I wake up and feel that the work is just beginning. Through working on the voicEd Radio project, I've learned how to craft conversations that get to the heart of the issues that are faced by those working in education today. I've come to understand the importance of connecting conversations, ideas and perspectives. I've learned that disagreement is not a closed door, but an invitation to further discussion. From a technical perspective, I've learned how to make these conversations SOUND GOOD, so that the messages and ideas are not lost in the mix—literally.Moving ahead into the next iteration of the voicEd Radio work, I hope to find better ways to create powerful connections between the academy and the classroom. How can research have a greater impact on practice and, just as important, how can what is happening in classrooms influence the type of research that is being done in the country's schools of education?If any of this interests you or, at the very least, trips an imaginative wire for you, I would love to connect!I've come to firmly believe that if we are going to change the way we THINK about education in Canada, we're going to have to change the way we TALK about education in Canada.
