Key concepts of my research in epidemiology and ecology:• Heterogeneity• Nonliearity• Stochasticity• ComplexityKey questions that I investigate:• How does individual, spatial, and temporal heterogeneity determine both environmentally-transmitted and directly-transmitted pathogen transmission dynamics?• How does the interaction among these sources of heterogeneity influence the pathogen transmission?• What if a pathogen can possess multiple transmission pathways (e.g. airborne, waterborne, direct contact-based)?• How does environmental factors (e.g., temperature, photoperiod, etc) influence insect life history, population dynamics, and vector-borne disease dynamics?Key computational methods that I use in my research:• Agent-based simulation• Time series and spectrum analysis• Spatial analysis and GIS applications• Network analysis and graph models• Stochastic modelingHighlights in my scientific career:• Interdisciplinary capability (ecology/epidemiology/entomology and mathematics/statistics/computational science)• Interpersonal communication skills• Independent and collaborative research (various original research and review papers, public presentations, and PI for several projects)• Intensive teaching experiences (instructing, invited lectures, research projects for undergraduate and graduate students)

Graduate Research AssociateWorld Health Organization Jun 2009 - Aug 2009Geneva 27, Ge, ChBecame graduate research assistant with Dr. Matthew Ferrari (Penn State Biology) and Dr. John Fricks (Penn State Statistics) to develop dynamic models for global dynamics of measles at country-level to facilitate immunization programs at the World Health Organization (WHO). Developed advanced statistical methods (the nonlinear state-space model, also known as the dynamic linear model) to fit the dynamic models in order to predict and confirm case numbers for countries in different economical status. The study has been published in the Royal Statistical Society Series C.
