  • Tolerx, Inc.
    Senior Director, Business Development
    Tolerx, Inc. Jul 2002 - Oct 2011
    Cambridge, Ma, Us
This time period marked my transition from research to the business side of drug development during which my role and responsibilities increased incrementally from Manager to Senior Manager, Assistant Director, Director, and Senior Director of Business Development. In these roles I learned the fundamentals of business operations, strategic thinking, and finance. Responsibilities included:• Generating capital from venture capital firms and public markets (prepared slide presentations, orchestrated due diligence process, drafted business section of S-1 registration statement)• Executing collaboration and license agreements with large pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, universities, government agencies, and for non-profit organizations (completed $760M collaboration with a large pharmaceutical company)• Interacted with senior executive team (finance, research, clinical development, regulatory, marketing, manufacturing) to assess value/feasibility of in-licensing opportunities and internal development products. Performed NPV analysis, patent estate review, market research, competitive landscape assessment.• Strengthening intellectual property portfolio through patent in-licensing• PR/IR - drafted and issued press releases, designed/maintained website, presented at industry conferences
  • Tolerx, Inc.
    Alliance Manager
    Tolerx, Inc. Oct 2007 - Oct 2010
    Cambridge, Ma, Us
While working in the business development function (above), facilitated collaboration, team building, and execution of business goals for all existing drug development partnerships, including a collaboration with a large pharmaceutical company, a large biotechnology company, a for non-profit organization, and our technology licensors. From this role learned key leadership skills; managing without authority, conflict resolution, managing and measuring work, team building, and organizational agility.
  • Tolerx, Inc.
    Manager, Preclinical Development
    Tolerx, Inc. Nov 2000 - Jul 2002
    Cambridge, Ma, Us
This role began my third adventure in a start-up organization (assembled desk on first day) and was especially exciting due to the novel science (immunological tolerance) the company was focused on. As a founding scientist (4th employee) was responsible for establishing preclinical proof of concept and completing GLP compliant studies to support the clinical use of TRX1 (ant-CD4) monoclonal antibody. Prepared all final reports and supporting documentation and associated sections of two approved IND filings while managing a Research Scientist II. From this experience I learned to appreciate the risk entrepreneurs and investors take, while also reveling in the excitement of building a company, a culture, and technology.Technical skills utilized included: study design, flow cytometry, ELISA, gel electrophoresis, tissue culture, competitive binding assays
  • Markettools
    Senior Project Manager
    Markettools Aug 1999 - Nov 2000
Fulfilled a long-time goal to live in San Francisco and tried something new by jumping inside the internet start-up bubble. In this role I learned how to conduct market research, design online surveys (HTML coding) and most importantly, learned how to provide excellent customer service. Conducted market research for corporate clients utilizing online survey technology (Zooomerang® and others). Interfaced with customers to identify panelists, developed survey questionnaire, designed “look and feel”, deployed via email invitation, and tabulated results. Ensured customer satisfaction by providing support to survey participants; resolved technical issues, arranged incentive rewards and collected feedback.
  • Leukosite, Inc.
    Project Manager Iii
    Leukosite, Inc. Mar 1996 - Jun 1999
As part of this role I had the fortunate opportunity to co-author the CMC section of the Biological License Application (BLA) for CAMPATH® (Alemtuzumab) that was approved for the treatment of chronic lymphopcytic leukemia. It is currently also approved for the treatment of multiple sclerosis (Lemtrada). Being a (albeit small) part of the team that helped bring this product to market was deeply fulfilling. This role also marked a transition from the laboratory bench to the manufacturing floor. Other responsibilities included managing product ampoule inventory, overseeing stability studies, shipment of Clinical Trial Material (CTM) from manufacturing facility to distribution centers, and product release testing. Supervised two employees (Project Manager II and Project Manager I).
  • Leukosite, Inc.
Associate Research Scientist - Preclinical Development
    Leukosite, Inc. Mar 1995 - Mar 1996
As the research candidates transitioned into the development phase, I transitioned with them. As part of this role I designed, validated, and performed a clinical assay used to monitor pharmacokinetic activity of a humanized monoclonal antibody (LDP-01) therapy in a first-in-man study. Also completed the first non-clinical studies of Entyvio® (vedolizumab/LDP-02) currently approved for ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. This role provided my first experience as a manager. I learned first hand how challenging it can be to transition from an individual contributor to a leader and getting results through others.
  • Leukosite, Inc.
    Research Scientist - Experimental Therapeutics
    Leukosite, Inc. Mar 1994 - Mar 1995
Instead of pursuing medical school, I chose to stay in research and join a new start-up company as their 12th employee. This turned out to be a fortunate choice as LeukoSite was an exceptional organization that produced several therapies that are now approved as well as many future industry leaders. From this experience I learned the immeasurable value of company culture. Everyone worked hard here and we had a blast doing it.At the bench I was responsible for the assessing diseased tissues to identify potential drug targets. Technical skills utilized included histopathology, immunohistology, and in situ hybridization, amongst others.
  • Harvard Medical School
    Research Assistant Ii
Harvard Medical School Jul 1992 - Mar 1994
    Boston, Ma, Us
In this role I learned the basics of research and the scientific method in practice. This was perhaps the ideal first job for a researcher as Harvard is by nature a learning institution and this position provided exceptional learning and training opportunities. As a Research Assistant I played a significant role in several studies assessing the pathology of HIV infection and methods to potentially prevent disease. Technical skills included data collection, biopsy and blood sampling, histology, immunohistochemistry, special staining techniques, and cryopreservation.
