    While a research assistant at MIT, I was a graduate student working on reducing the computational load of ambulatory medical monitoring devices. My thesis was entitled "Reducing the Computational Demands of Medical Monitoring Algorithms by Examining Less Data."One application that I worked on was ambulatory seizure onset detection. In this application, our goal was to detect seizures while making the system more lightweight and use less energy. Reducing the amount of information transmitted or processed can greatly reduce energy consumption. However, using less data can make the detection task more difficult.Using a machine learning based algorithm, we were able to improve the energy consumption of a patient-specific seizure onset detector by an average of 60%.

    I helped design and implement a distributed ``people''-finding system to support PDA clients in a voice communication network. In particular, our goal was to support telephone conversation using iPAQs running IP over 802.11b wireless networks. One challenge for such a system is power consumption. The continuous usage of 802.11b wireless cards in an iPAQ would cause the batteries to drain quickly. I designed small basestations and hardware for the iPAQ to allow the iPAQs to operate in an extremely low-power standby mode.
