Peter Shipman work experience
A career timeline built from the work history available for this profile.
It Generalist
The IT Leadership Program is designed to transform passionate and ambitious college graduates into future leaders in the IT profession. The program builds critical technical, business, and consulting competencies over four 6-month rotations. Through hands-on experience, industry leading training, and networking opportunities, ITLPers are given a fast-track to building a solid foundation on which to bring into full time roles, and also exposure to the many career options available within the IT organization.
Data Architect
Managing data migrations into Dell's Data Lake. Using pipeline tools and python scripts to move data and ensure it maintains integrity during transition. Primarily SQL queries and scripting to assit the team with migrations
It Development Analyst
They just changed the titles of ITLP after the Dell merger. Still doing the same thing for a few more months
Itlp - Data Science
Studied the fundamentals of data science. I looked more in depth into Python and its tool-sets for data scientists, as well as some of the more popular prediction algorithms. While this was a long process, I found it to be valuable in changing how I look at data-sets and data visualizations. I ultimately felt this path was not where I wanted to take my career, and have moved to a data architect position to pursue my interests in data visualization.
Itlp - Pivotal Cloud Services Marketing
Coordinated with Pivotal employees to evangelize their cloud operating model around IT. I organized meetings and events to show managers and programmers the benefits of switching to a cloud model, and how changing to microservices will improve deployment and code management over time. We hoped to encourage people to stop developing monolithic software and create smaller services that can be scaled based on demand.
Itlp - Process Operations Rotation
The Process Operations team owns and manage the formally designed ITSM (IT Service Management) Processes, based on the ITIL Framework. These processes include Incident Management, Request Fulfillment, Change Management, Problem Management, Knowledge Management, and IT Asset Management (ITAM). We are responsible for providing metrics associated with each process and gap analysis which provides insight to be used by IT in order to help improve our overall Service Delivery to our internal customers.During this rotation I worked with groups internal to IT to develop Tableau Dashboards to report on metrics they use to manage their daily operations. The first dashboard was Application Availability for the IT Operations Command Center. They track incidents to determine the amount of time each application was down on an monthly and quarterly basis. They wanted a dashboard that will track the downtime by application, and service center. The second dashboard was for IT Asset Management, that took a list of the laptop allocation and calculated the number of assets from the list that were eligible to be collected and reallocated to new users as a cost savings mechanism. The third dashboard tracked Service Operations Ticket Finance. It used a list of Incident and Request tickets that come in, and assign an average cost for each ticket in each tier based on how complex it was to solve. The dashboard was able to show Ticket Volume, Cost, and other metrics over time, and develop a trend line that can be broken down by the support Tiers.
Itlp - Remote Services Rotation
My first rotation in the IT Leadership Program was spent working with the Remote services team, working on the EMC Secure Remote Services (ESRS) application. I worked on three major projects as a developer, creating prototypes and proof of concept for new technologies to be integrated with ESRS. My manager, Adel Hanna, did an excellent job getting me experience and visibility with the work I did, and taught me a lot about looking forward and creating positive change. Project 1: Developed a new methodology for users to place networking information into a new deployment of the ESRS application. The existing system was not intuitive, and caused many customers to complain. I developed a new method utilizing Bash scripting, and VMware tools to create a simple window that will auto-populate the networking information on deployment.Project 2: Created proof of concept micro-service to calculate customer connectivity to the ESRS application. I developed a Spring application that pulled data from an oracle database, then presented the data in a web page. This was the proof of concept for a potential API that would bring customer data to relevant areas of IT as needed.Project 3: I researched Docker containers in windows server 216, to see if it was possible to run the ESRS application in the Windows environment. My research revealed that due to incompatible kernels, it was not possible to quickly deploy ESRS without fundamental changes in the application.
Student
I spent one year training traditional Shaolin Martial Arts in the mountains of china. Kunyu Mountain Academy is an international school open to anyone willing to stay and train. I spent a year doing weekly stretching and body conditioning, while learning traditional performance forms, as well as Chinese Kickboxing. There was a strong focus on wholistic living, and mental focus and meditation training to help each student focus on and accomplish their goals.
President
Organizing all club activitites, including fundraisers, community service and campus events. I run the weekly member and officer meetings, as well as meet with faculty and professionals from the Industry to promote the club, its members, and provide as many opportunities for my club members to learn about their field. I have organized a semesterly hackathon between the four major colleges in the Utica Rome area for all students in computer related fields to practice offensive and defensive security skills and tools. I am also responsible for organizing club trips, notably to the annual Northeast Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition (NECCDC), and the DerbyCon Computer Security convention in Louisville Kentucky.
Intern In The Office Of Product Security
I work with the Product Security team to develop standards, tools, and training to assist designers and engineers develop secure products for EMC. Our team works hard to ensure each product developed has strong security measures built in at every step of the design process. I am currently working on the System Development Lifecycle, Key management, and Certificate Authorities under the guidance of the Common Security Engineer team within the office.
