With over a decade of experience in the nonprofit sector, my goal in connecting with others is to build genuine relationships that advance causes and allow for thriving communities. I currently work as Director of Development at Prism, a BIPOC-led nonprofit news outlet that centers on the people, places, and issues presently underreported by national media. My diverse background includes in school case management work with refugee and incarcerated youth, working for education equity through community organizing, partnering with educators and school boards to deliver LGBTQ+ literature access to students across the country, and even volunteering as a crisis counselor for LGBTQ+ youth. Outside of my professional career, I sit on the boards of three nonprofits: Democratizing Philanthropy Project, Critical Mass Dance Company, and We Are Voters. The Lead SoCal program aims to provide regional professionals the leadership and management skills, create spaces to practice professional growth, and develop meaningful networks to expand our capacity for impact within our teams, organizations, and communities. Across nine-months, I learned from 1) peer coaching, 2) experienced leadership, mindfulness, and DEI facilitators, and 3) the broader Coro, Lead Programs, and regional community through Coro’s unique blend of experiential programming to stretch my professional and management skill-set through doing. The curriculum included a wide range of professional skills-building, such as Adaptive Leadership, DEIB and Anti-Racism frameworks, Effective Communication and Advocacy, Effective Inquiry and Critical Thinking, Giving and Receiving Feedback, Interpersonal Leadership Styles™, Managing Diverse Teams, Mindfulness and Gratitude Practices, Project Management tools, Public Narrative frameworks, Self-Awareness and Self-Management tools, and Stakeholder Analysis and Coalition Building, among others. During my time at Trevor, I succeeded in Community Engagement department first as a Volunteer Coordinator then transitioning to Community Engagement Manager. This included recruiting, screening, on-boarding, and training 300+ volunteers monthly, and 1,300+ active ongoing volunteers.• Developed policies for volunteers in financial aid, screening, background checks, training, and communication.• Spearheaded and implemented a new volunteer on-boarding procedure. The redesign improved the effectiveness of screening, collection of data, and training of new and active volunteers. This reduced on-boarding time by 87%, and an increased number of active volunteers. Transition decreased department costs and saved staff work hours.• Trained as a volunteer to answer calls from LGBTQ youth ages 13-24, providing guidance and support through crisis situations. • Volunteered additional time in training new volunteers.
